Here are some of the usual questions students may have throughout their semesters here at TVCC, along with some important resources.


 

Students will sign into Canvas via the tab located at the top of the TVCC Homepage using their Cardinal ID and password.

Example:

Cardinal ID: DoeJ123

Default Password:

j1234D2000

 

For new students:

After you are registered for classes, you will receive an email with instructions on how to activate your Cardinal ID. Once activated, you will be able to log into your Canvas account. Note: Pay attention to the semester you are registered for as you will not be able to sign into your account as a new user until it gets closer to the beginning of that semester.

 

  • How do I access my online courses? You will access your online courses by clicking the “Canvas” tab located at the top of the TVCC website. (We recommend bookmarking Canvas in your preferred browser for ease of access.)

 

  • What should I do if I encounter technical issues with Canvas? Contact Distance Learning for any Canvas-related issue or question.

 

  • What do I do if I forget my password to MyCardinalConnect, Canvas, or my Cardinal Email? You can copy and paste the URL below to easily reset your Microsoft password.

  • How can I contact my professors or classmates? Your Canvas Inbox is a great resource for students to contact their instructors and peers or they can use their student Cardinal Mail via Outlook.

 

  • What should I do if I have questions about the course content? Students should always contact their instructor regarding any questions they may have about the content in a Canvas course.

 

  • Students can find their instructor's contact information and Office Hours on their course homepage in Canvas.
 
  • How can I stay organized and manage my time effectively in an online setting? The required Learning Frameworks course offered here at TVCC gives students many great resources to help them discover their Learning style and offers many study guides and tips for new students.

 

  • What strategies can I use to balance coursework with other responsibilities? By scheduling designated study time each week and not procrastinating on assignments students will succeed in any online environment.
 
  • How will exams and quizzes be administered in an online course? All of your online Quizzes and Exams will be administered through Canvas LMS. If an online exam is proctored then students can schedule a time at one of the TVCC Testing Centers or they may download Respondus Lockdown Browser to take their exams from home. If the course requires LDB students will be given instructions on how to download this program from their Canvas course.

 

  • Are there practice materials available to help prepare for assessments? Some instructors provide study guides/practice quizzes for students to utilize. Students can request study guides from instructors as well.

 

  • What are the grading policies for online assignments? The grading policies for online courses are the same as Traditional face-to-face courses.  Which are:

Students will be able to view their grades for each course for that semester via the “Grades” tab in Canvas. For your current GPA or to review your final grade from a previous semester students can go to MyCardinalConnect to review this information.

 
  • Where can I find online library resources for research? The TVCC Library’s is a great free resource for all TVCC students. The TVCC Libraries offer many useful services for students like an extensive Online database, access to Refworks, Libby: The Library Reading App, and much more! 

 

  • Are there tutoring or academic support services available online? The TVCC Cardinal Success Centers offer tutoring to any TVCC student both on and off campus. Students can also access free tutoring By clicking the “tutor.com 24/7 online tutoring” tab in the course navigation panel in Canvas.
 
  • What equipment and software do I need for online classes? You will need access to a Laptop or Desktop computer to access online course materials. Don’t have a PC? TVCC Cardinal Success Centers and Libraries offer free computer access to students, or students can rent laptops from any TVCC Library or IT Department.

 

  • Is there a minimum internet speed required for uploading assignments or participating in Canvas courses? It is recommended to have a minimum Internet speed of 512kbps, and an upload speed of 2Mbps or more to ensure all of the features in Canvas work properly.
 
  • How can I access counseling or mental health services online? Contact the Student Access and Counseling department for all student support. 

 

  • Are there resources available for students with disabilities or special accommodations? Yes, for special accommodations students need to contact the Student Access and Counseling department.
