TITLE:  Surgical Technology Coordinator

 

REQUISITION NUMBER: 69

 

LOCATION:  Health Science Center - Terrell

 

MONTHS TO BE WORKED PER YEAR:  9

 

SALARY: Per TVCC faculty salary schedule

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION REQUIRED:

Associate degree in Surgical Technology from a CAAHEP-accredited program; Certified Surgical Technologist, maintaining health requirements for clinical sites; Certified in CPR.

EDUCATION PREFERRED:

Bachelor’s degree in Health Science, Allied Health, or Education (completed within four years of hire date); Certified as a Surgical First Assistant (CSFA); Teaching experience in post-secondary education; current member of the Association of Surgical Technologists.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Two (2) years of surgical scrubbing experience in the last five (5) years

OTHER LICENSES OR CERTIFICATIONS:

Must be certified in CPR

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides Classroom/laboratory/clinical instruction consistent with course objectives and standards for Surgical Technology as defined by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) and by the Association of Surgical Technologists.
  • Correlate classroom instruction with clinical experience through appropriate assignments and clinical conferences/evaluations according to the Program curriculum plan.
  • Assign learning experiences to integrate theory with practice.
  • Communicate with appropriate staff within the cooperating agencies regarding the objectives to be met and the skills and procedures students need.
  • Communicate schedule changes with students and agencies.
  • Orient students to clinical facilities and supervise students as required by accreditation, the program, and the facility.
  • Monitor safe laboratory/clinical practice for students.
  • Select a variety of learning experiences in a variety of settings, which will allow students to gain knowledge of their role in the healthcare team and meet their educational needs.
  • Utilize a variety of teaching strategies and modern technology in the classroom, laboratory, and/or clinical.
  • Evaluate students continually, keeping them apprised of their progress, maintain accurate student records, and submit grades as required.
  • Establish positive interpersonal relations with students.
  • Act as a role model by practicing the concepts, principles, skills, and attitudes needed to be an excellent healthcare worker.
  • Document, report, and resolve student disciplinary problems according to established College and Program guidelines.
  • Supervise students as they perform return demonstrations/role plays, etc. in the classroom laboratory, and as they perform skills in the clinical laboratory, according to approved standards for Surgical Technology.
  • Submit all required student grades through my cardinal connection by the due date.
  • Develop and/or revise course syllabi and outlines, as needed, to meet the Program philosophy and objectives according to the Instructional Division Guidelines.
  • Recommend textbooks to be used in courses according to the Program plan.
  • Request/recommend additions or deletions to the Learning Resource Center in cooperation with the Program faculty.
  • Plan for needed handouts, syllabi, and other educational materials in advance, and follow College, Division, and Program rules for printing and copyrights.
  • Coordinate program advisory committee meetings annually.
  • Assist in Student AST memberships.
  • Assist in National Certification exam applications.
  • Prepare ARC/STSA annual reports.
  • Increase and improve teaching skills and subject knowledge through personal and professional development such as Staff Development activities, in-service days, workshops/conferences, formal education, continuing education, technical updates, and personal study or professional reading.
  • Maintain Certification in Surgical Technology.
  • Maintain current CPR certification for healthcare providers.
  • Prepare for, attend, and contribute to Program faculty meetings.
  • Take responsibility for meeting annual College requirements for diversity and safety training.
  • Participate in Program activities by supplying information, data, and time for, curriculum development, budget preparation, new faculty orientation, class schedules, long-range planning, and other required reports and activities.
  • Take an active role in college-wide and Division teams voluntarily or as assigned.
  • Serve on interview committees for employee candidates.
  • Represent the College professionally at conferences, meetings, and other functions as requested by the College or an outside agency such as a professional organization
  • The Program Director and faculty will develop a plan for professional development activities within and outside the college while staying within budgeted resources for conference registration, board & lodging, and commercial and miscellaneous travel.
  • Other duties as assigned by appropriate supervisory personnel.
  • Maintain confidentiality when required
  • Abide by TVCC policies and procedures
