Need some examples and inspiration?
Service Learning/Community Service Examples
- Tutoring children in the community and introducing them to works of literature, art, music, etc.
- A concept shared to inform the community or a group of people about the relevance and ideas for change.

Research/Field Study Examples
- Science experiment
- Writing and producing a speech.
Leadership Examples
- The governance of campus life and student affairs through leadership
- Specialized skills acquired through formal training
- Students identify a need and produce a solution (i.e. construct signs (welding) to place around a TVCC campus reinforcing exercise and health (nursing)…cross curricular collaboration!)
Civil Engagement Examples
- Classes and projects have components of reflection and engagement.
- A statistics lesson turns into a project for community information to inform decisions, events, or actions in the community.
Internships
- Academic programs integrating classroom learning and productive work experience in a field related to a student’s academic and career goals.
Arts & Humanities Examples
- Video presentation
- Original works of writing, music, or art. Digital images and high quality.
- Work of writing could be short essays, etc.
- Work of poetry could be free verse or formal.
- Website design
- Community beautification
TVCC faculty and staff, with support from the Office of Instructional Innovation and Support, coordinate and host the annual Learning Symposium. Thank you to the Henderson County Bar Association and individual donors for supporting the 2025 Learning Symposium.
All TVCC students (part-time, full-time, & dual credit) are invited and encouraged to participate. All faculty and staff are encouraged to mentors students' participation and to volunteer. The college, community, alumni, and sponsors are invited to attend all sessions and support the student presenters.
The mission of the TVCC Learning Symposium is to recognize and celebrate the knowledge students bring and learn from the learning environment by providing a venue for students to showcase their work and foster an environment for students, faculty, staff, administration, alumni, and the community to network and support the learning being conducted at TVCC.
