What is Academic Coaching?

Are you studying long hours, taking notes, reading and watching all your course materials, but still not accomplishing your academic goals?

Academic coaching is personalized, one-on-one meeting(s) to help you improve your learning skills and performance. Academic coaching helps you study smarter! Develop your skills in various areas like time management, goal setting, and test preparation to help you examine your learning barriers and discover strategies to overcome them.

The ability to adjust to the demands and pressures of the college environment is often difficult for students. Factors such as poor time management, lack of study skills and not knowing what college resources are available can lead to an unsuccessful college experience.

Academic coaches help you and all students successfully cope with many of these difficulties by serving as a role model who will listen, understand, provide direction and serve as a liaison between you and your college life.

Advising, Counseling or Coaching?

Remember, academic coaching is different from academic advising or counseling. All three fields often use very similar skills and sometimes encounter the same issues, but each play important but diverse roles!

Academic advisors help students craft class schedules, answer questions regarding degree plan progress, identify available educational opportunities such as internships, and guide students toward successful graduation.

Counselors focus on mental health issues and helping students cope with the variety of lifechanging experiences they encounter during their college experience.

Academic coaches help identify barriers to academic success and support students with the necessary resources to overcome those barriers.
