Student Media wins big at TIPA Convention
Student Media wins 17 TIPA awardsThe Trinity Valley Community College Student Media Department recently brought home 17 awards from the 2015 Texas Intercollegiate Press Association Convention in San Antonio.
The group won three on-site awards and 14 previously published awards.
Bodey Cooper (Kemp) finished third in print sports writing. Abbi Parker (Brownsboro) and Logan Collins (Athens) received honorable mention in news photography and TV announcing, respectively. In the previously published division, TVCC won five first-place awards, one second-place award, four third-place awards and four honorable mention awards, seven of them from the online division.
“I was a little nervous about this year’s convention,” said Deidre Jones, TVCC’s student media adviser and instructor. “When we decided to solely concentrate on our online paper, I thought we would knock ourselves out of the running for awards in the newspaper category. I think our gamble paid off.
“There were only a few community colleges that submitted entries for the online division,” Jones said. “We were competing against four-year schools such as the University of Houston, UT-Tyler and Midwestern State. We won three first-place awards in that division.”
TVCC also won two radio awards and one TV award.
Shaimariah Jackson, a second-year student from Crandall, won first- and third-place in radio spot news and second-year student Kolby Meshack (Mesquite) received honorable mention in TV commercial, PSA or promo.
“The great thing about our online paper is that the students can add their audio or video to their stories,” Jones said. “One story that is published online can qualify for the newspaper, online, radio or TV contest.”
