Due to her exceptional leadership skills, Trinity Valley Community College Student Government Association President Genesis Forman has been nominated the Student of the Year for the Texas Junior College Student Government Association (TJCSGA) Region.

Forman’s fellow SGA members recommended Forman for nomination due to her constant drive to help others and leadership skills.

“For the last two years, Genesis has been a member of our Student Government Association, our Red Bird Leadership Program, and a student worker in our recruitment and admissions officer,” TVCC Director of Recruiting and Admissions and SGA Advisor Courtney Skiles shared. “As her advisor, mentor and friend, she has made me proud of the hard work she puts in work behind the scenes and her selflessness towards her peers and the student body.”

While attending TVCC, Forman has been named SGA Vice President and President, member and Public Relations Officer of the First-Generation Student Organization, Vice President and co-founder of the Fishing Club, Red Bird Leader, Homecoming Nominee and served on the student hiring committee for the Associate Vice President of Student Advocacy.

“With anything Genesis puts her mind to she achieves it while maintaining her commitment with diligence and a welcoming spirit,” Skiles added. “Genesis embodies leadership and leads our state organization with pride and a friend to all.”

Forman will have to compete at the TJCSGA Region Competition on Feb. 23. If she wins, she will compete against five other regional winners at the state convention in April.

“I think I have a strong chance to compete,” Forman expressed. “And I really am hopeful that I make it to state.”

Forman shared that for nomination she had to create a pamphlet with information that showcases her leadership skills, but also showcases her personality and her influence as a SGA President.

“These judges are looking at these submissions for hours, so I tried to focus on typos, grammatical issues and make it look amusing and entertaining,” Forman explained. “I added bullet points for judges that do a quick scan and added quotes from my peers to back-me-up.”

TVCC alumni Colby Calhoun, who worked alongside Forman as a SGA Advisor and Recruiter, shared that Forman is a dependable leader who is always looking out for the betterment of her fellow students.

“Genesis is one of our top students,” Calhoun said. “I first met Genesis on a recruiting visit and instantly knew she was a natural leader. She’s intelligent and strong and still manages to surprise me.”

Forman’s fellow SGA members shared she is a kind, supportive and a fantastic leader and friend.

“I had the honor of starting my SGA journey with Genesis,” TVCC sophomore and SGA Secretary Madison Himes said. “We were both new to this type of scene, trying to figure out precisely what to do and how to make friends, and we immediately hit it off.”

Himes was impressed by the dedication she saw in Forman.

“I have seen how she always gives people a chance to come up with new ideas, but if they need her help, she will take charge and make sure everything turns out the best it can while including everyone,” Himes said. “I remember her always showing up to as many events as she could, while maintaining a full-time job and a 4.0 GPA [Grade Point Average.]”

Freshman and SGA Delegate Heidi Davis expressed the care for others she saw in Forman.

“Genesis is probably the best leader I could have asked for as a freshman,” Davis said. “She sets the standard for what is expected of us. She is kind and supportive and always all ears. She cares about her Student Government family. Genesis is genuine and honest. She slays!”

Forman shared that any student interested in learning about SGA or being a part of it should give it a try.

“SGA is a big reason why I’m at TVCC,” Forman expressed. “It has caused a huge personal growth for me, and I have grown into the person I am because of SGA. College and adulting can be rough, but it’s nice to find friends that are there, care about you, support you and become a big family. A lot of great things happening to me are due to being a part of SGA."
