A joyful sound: TVCC band looking for future members

The Trinity Valley Community College Band played their way to Kemp High School Thursday.

Director of Bands Jeff DuBose and trumpet players Zak McCain, Timothy Smith and Tuba player Dominic Gregory led off with four songs for the group.

Following that, they sat in on a selection with the Kemp High School band.

For McCain, Smith and Gregory this was a chance to let the members see what playing for a junior college is like during the hour-long visit.

“There are some pretty solid players here in Kemp,” McCain said. “What I really enjoyed was as a music major myself, I get to caught up in the nitty gritty of not doing this perfectly but coming here to read a piece for fun and play more grandiose music was a fun opportunity.”

Following the four-selections by the TVCC group, the piece they joined in on was called First Suite in E-flat by Gustav Holst.

“That was not an easy song that they just played and they did pretty good in my opinion. It was a good experience all around,” Smith said.

Kemp junior Madison O’Pry said she sat by McCain and he said this was his first time playing this piece. She enjoyed the fact that McCain spoke so highly of their band.

“I knew Tim from summer band and it was good seeing him,” O’Pry said. “This new guy Zak is good. We were playing this piece and I was astonished and it was crazy.”

Gregory appreciated how excited the Yellowjacket band was. He said they should be proud of what they are doing during class.

“It was definitely nice to show the kids that there are great players here (at TVCC),” Gregory said. “We have a great group to play in and we are having fun playing for kids and just anybody. I really like that the Kemp kids are wanting to be here. I like that they enjoy playing the music and they are really fun to play with.”

Following the performance, McCain said he hopes the students will consider TVCC for their musical endeavors.

“It was great getting the opportunity to come out here. It was great to talk to the kids and I really loved high school band,” McCain said. “Before band, I had nothing to do and nothing to take up my free time. It is great to come out to all of these programs and see all of these kids with the same love of music that I have. I hope all of these students really consider TVCC. I hope that they consider music as well.”
