Active Shooter

If You See an Armed Person

Call immediately:

What TVCC Police Will Do

  • TVCC Police are trained to enter the building immediately and move straight toward the threat.
  • Their first priority is to stop the shooter, not rescue people right away.
  • Rescue teams will arrive shortly after to help the injured and evacuate people.

What You Should Do

  • Stay calm and do not interfere with police actions.
  • Follow all officer instructions exactly.
  • When approaching police, keep your hands up and visible so they know you are not a threat.
  • Follow directions from both the first officers and rescue teams.

If an Active Shooter Is Nearby

Quickly choose the safest option for survival:

RUN

  • Know your escape route.
  • Leave immediately—even if others don’t follow.
  • Leave your belongings.
  • Help others escape if you safely can.
  • Keep people away from danger areas.
  • Keep your hands visible as you evacuate.
  • Follow police instructions.
  • Don’t move the wounded.
  • Call 911 once you’re safe.

HIDE

Choose a hiding spot that:

  • Is out of the shooter’s sight.
  • Offers protection (locked office, heavy objects).
  • Doesn’t trap you.

Secure your hiding place:

  • Lock and barricade the door.
  • Turn off lights, radios, TVs.
  • Silence your phone.
  • Hide behind heavy furniture.
  • Stay completely quiet.

If you can’t run or hide:

  • Stay calm.
  • Call 911 if possible.
    • If you can’t talk, leave the line open so the dispatcher can hear.

FIGHT

Only if your life is in immediate danger:

  • Act aggressively.
  • Throw objects and use improvised weapons.
  • Yell.
  • Fully commit to stopping the attacker.
