Patient Care Technology

PCT Pre-registration for the Spring 2010 class will be on Monday, November 16, 2009.  We will make a list of all the applicants who are here at 0800.  We will start with an orientation to the program.  Then we will start registering according to the first letter of the last name using the registration schedule listed in the fall 2010 TVCC schedule.  This will continue until the spaces are filled.  If we have two students in a grouping but only one space left, we will do random selection for one position and the other will be the first alternate should a position become available. There will be no advantage to being here early. Only those who are present at 0800 will be eligible to be chosen. In order to be able to register, students must have previously applied to TVCC, and must bring proof of the first Hepatitis B vaccination received before November 1, 2009 or a blood test showing positive immunity to Hepatitis B.  The application to TVCC is now on-line.

Notice: Spring 2010 schedule will be T/W/Th/F.

The Patient Care Technology (PCT) program is a 16 credit hour certificate program designed to educate and train individuals to function as nursing support personnel who are above the level of a nursing assistant but below the level requiring licensure. This program is one of the few such programs offered for college credit.  The major focus is the role of the PCT in the hospital setting. The student is trained to support the nursing staff by performing duties which may be safely and legally delegated. Included in the courses are the role and scope of practice of the PCT, cross-training in basic health care skills, ethical and legal concepts, and alterations in various body systems. Also covered are principles of infection control, safety, activities of daily living, vital signs, professionalism, meeting nutrition and elimination needs, providing skin care, communication skills (written and verbal), and consideration of growth and development and grief and loss concepts. Lecture and skills laboratory practice and evaluation are used to prepare the student to meet the objectives.  Skills such as Foley catheter insertion, collection of specimens, enemas, colostomy care, sterile dressing changes, pulse oximetry, obtaining an EKG, basic phlebotomy skills, and blood glucose monitoring are included. Clinical experiences are provided to give the student the opportunity to administer basic nursing care and practice selected skills for patients in all age groups.  Graduates of the PCT program are eligible to take the national exam to become a Nationally Certified Patient Care Technician (NCPCT).

Students who have questions regarding the application and selection processes or general information regarding any of the health occupations courses should contact the counselor or the Provost at the Health Science Center.
