PLAB 1164 Practicum – Phlebotomy/Phlebotomist (Certification Course) (1-0-7-0)

This is a clinical (practicum) course that requires students to do live blood draws/sticks.
Prerequisite: Must: (1) have completed PLAB 1323 with grade of 80% (B) or higher (or have Dean and
Instructor approval based on other training and experience); A or); (2) meet essential standards for visual
acuity, auditory perception with corrective devices, appropriate physical ability and stamina including
manual dexterity of gross motor and fine motor skills and coordination needed for training/employment;(3)
provide an acceptable criminal history background check; (4) provide a current and complete immunization
record including a flu shot; and,(5) provide a current negative TB test Student must submit to a random
drug test.
This course is the second course required to prepare the student to be eligible for national NHA phlebotomy
certification. This course also helps the student in preparation for the industry certification for Certified
Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) and helps with employment skills.
The didactic portion of this course must be completed with a grade of 80% (B) or higher for the student to
perform live blood draws. To be eligible to participate in the certification exam the student must have (1)
have a course grade average of 80% (B), must have successfully completed a skills check off with the
instructor to equal a total of 30 successful blood draws (10 of these draws can be transferred in from PLAB
1323 if that basic course was taken at TVCC and with successfully completed in the prior semester, (2)
student must have TSI scores of 340 in math and 346 in reading. Students do live blood draws/sticks on
each other; therefore, students must be willing for classmates to do live phlebotomy sticks on them to
participate in the course. All students are responsible for informing TVCC of any personal medical
conditions that would put other students or patients at-risk during live blood draws.
Lab fees: $195 – includes lab supplies, drug testing, certification voucher testing and liability insurance.
Students must qualify for vouchers and request them prior to the end of the semester (only). No vouchers
are available after the first testing attempt.
PLAB 1323 Phlebotomy (3-2-4-0)

This is a lecture/lab course. (Requires enrollment in each)
Prerequisite:(1)Student must be 18 years of age or older to perform the live sticks/blood draws required for
this course. (2) have completed immunizations including a current flu shot. (3) current negative TB test; (4)
acceptable criminal history background check;.(5) meet essential standards for visual acuity, and auditory
perception with corrective devices, appropriate physical ability and stamina including manual dexterity of
gross motor and fine motor skills and coordination needed for training/employment. Student must pass
random drug test(s).
This course includes studies of the circulatory system and performance of proper techniques using standard
precautions for these blood collections: vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary skin punctures,
butterfly needles, blood cultures, and specimen collections from adults, children and infants. Emphasis is on
infection prevention, patient identification, specimen labeling, quality assurance, specimen handling,
processing, accessioning, professionalism, ethics and terminology. Students will practice skills on manikins
and each other. All students are responsible for informing TVCC of any personal medical conditions that
would put other students at risk during live blood draw clinical experiences.
Students are required to sign a Medical Training Consent form acknowledging that they agree to participate
in medical at-risk tasks related to training.
This course is the first of two courses required to meet the requirements for national certification as a
phlebotomist. Certification eligibility includes semester grades of r B or higher for both phlebotomy courses
and the student must document TSI scores of a minimum of 340 in math and 346 in reading. Lab Fees: $95
(includes lab supplies, drug testing and liability insurance).
