MDCA 1317 Procedures in a Clinical Setting ( 3-3-1-2)

This is a lecture/lab/clinical course requiring large blocks of time in lab and at medical facilities.
(2) completed and passed MDCA 1260 Clinical-Medical/Clinical Assistant or have dean and instructor
approval, (3) have a current CPR certification for Health Care Providers; (4) have completed immunizations
including current flu shot; (5) have a current negative TB test; (6) have an acceptable criminal history
background check; (7) have minimum TSI scores of 340 for math and 346 for reading,(8) meet essential
standards for visual acuity, auditory perception with corrective devices, appropriate physical ability and
stamina including manual dexterity of gross motor and fine motor skills and coordination needed for
training/employment. Students must pass a random drug test. Students are required to sign a Medical
Training Consent form acknowledging that they agree to participation in medical training that has at risk
tasks related to training.
This course focuses on assisting the medical professional with patient assessment, examination and
treatment. It contains, but is not limited to inventory control, sterile techniques, vital signs, collection and
documentation of patient information, asepsis, office clinical procedures and other treatments and tasks as
appropriate in various medical setting. It is an introduction to some medical skills/concepts and the review
of other fundamental medical concepts/skills learned previously.
Students are required to: (1) participate in observations and participation in medical clinical practices, (2)
use many tools and resources for learning and practicing skills/concepts, (3) travel to medical clinical sites –
sometimes several miles from campus, (4) attend class regularly, (5) work in teams and with preceptors, (6)
do much outside of class study and practice testing to prepare for the certification exam.
Lab fees: $95 – includes drug testing, liability insurance in addition to supplies. (Student must be qualified
for the certification exam and make application for the exam fee voucher prior to the ending of the course,
and are only available for one testing attempt).
Skills development for assisting a medical professional for patient assessment, examination and treatment.
Course includes, but not limited to, measuring vital signs, collection and documentation of patient
information, collection of specimens and basic lab screening techniques, asepsis and office clinical
procedures.
NURA 1160 Clinical- Nursing Assistant/Aide and Patient Care Asst./Aide (1-0-8-0)

This is a clinical course periodically requiring full day schedules at a medical facility.
Prerequisites: Must: (1) completed and passed NURA 1401; (2) have completed all immunizations including
a current flu shot; (3) Students must have an acceptable criminal history background check; (4) have TSI
minimum scores of 340 in math and 346 in reading, (5) have a current negative TB test,(6) meet essential
standards for visual acuity, auditory perception with corrective devices, appropriate physical ability and
stamina including manual dexterity of gross motor and fine motor skills and coordination needed for
training/employment and (7) have a current CPR certification for Health Care Providers. Students must
pass a random drug test(s).
This clinical is locally known as Nurse Aide Certification (CNA) clinical. It is required that students pass all
skills check off exercises, tests, projects, and clinical experiences to pass the course.. Students must pass the
course with an average grade of 80 or higher, pass a comprehensive course exam, and pass a comprehensive
skills check off exam to qualify to participate in the industry certification exam.
Lab fee: $195 - includes drug testing,, lab supplies, student liability insurance, and certification exam fee.
(Students must be qualified for the certification exam and make application for the exam fee voucher prior
to the ending of the course.
