Vo-Tech Eligibility Requirements

Here's what's required to participate in Vo-Tech programs.

  • G.E.D. or High School Diploma, or 12 hours college academic credit and minimum E.A. (TABE) Test Scores. Offenders who have completed 12 hours of verified college academic credit are exempt from TABE testing requirements.
  • The TDCJ does not allow enrollment of sex offenders in Data Processing/Computer Information Technology and Computer Aided Drafting. 
  • Offenders who have a voted parole action indicating a “serve all” with a calculated date the same as their maximum expiration date must pay for college from their trust fund account or qualify for grant funding. (Incarcerated Individual Program Grant or Hazelwood)
  • Offenders with F.I. action dates must pay for their course and have WSD approval to participate.
  • Minimum E.A. (TABE) Test Scores for vocations:





Level D or A
6.5 ......................................................................................................................Masonry
7.5........................Auto Body Repair, Electrical Technology, Horticulture and Welding
8.0 ............................................................................Air Conditioning and Refrigeration
8.5 ..................................................................................................................Electronics
Level A
9.0..............................................................................................................Drafting/CAD
9.5 ............................................................................Computer Science/Data Processing
  • There may be no conflict with other scheduled programs, religious activities, etc.
  • GED or high school diploma.
  • Line Class I status or better. Custody level must be G3 or better to be considered or a G4 with the warden’s approval.
  • No major case for six months prior to enrollment.
  • Appropriate medical classification or waiver from medical restriction.
  • If you have a detainer, you must pay for classes from your trust fund account.
  • TDCJ requires student placement in vo-tech programs to be prioritized by release date and have a minimum of six months remaining in custody to complete the program.
