Mr. Michael Harman earned his B.S. in Biology with minors in both Chemistry and Oceanography from Edinboro University of PA and remained there earning his Master’s in Biology with concentrations in Genetics, Ecology, and Cell Biology. He then spent 3 years of post-grad at Penn State University where he worked on gene cloning, enzyme kinetics, monoclonal antibody production, and gel electrophoresis. He later returned to his alma mater, earning a PA teaching certification (6-12) in biology.
Mr. Harman started as an adjunct for Gannon University before taking a FT position at Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College for two years. From there he moved to Saudi Arabia where he taught Anatomy & Physiology at King Faud Military Medical College for three semesters before being hired at Lone Star College in Houston, TX. During his 14 years at LSC, he was awarded two TX Excellence of Teaching (NISOD) Awards, was a one-time nominee for the state Piper Award, received a writing award, and was inducted into the Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers for several years. Mr. Harman then took his current position at TVCC. Mr. Harman mostly teaches Anatomy & Physiology, teaching traditional face-to-face, online, hybrid, Interactive Television, and Dual Credit classes.
While in West Virginia, Mr. Harman created 2 protocols for testing and treating coal mine effluent, one for dissolved iron, aluminum, and manganese, the other for suspended solids. These methods were used nationally by the EPA until they were replaced by newer methodologies. While in Houston, he and his students carried out a 2 year study on mosquito populations in northern Harris County, later making two presentations at a state conference.
