Campus gearing up for action-packed Homecoming Week

TVCC
Trinity Valley Community College has a special Homecoming celebration in store this year as the college prepares to honor the band’s 65th anniversary and the choir program’s 50th anniversary.
“Music is a huge part of our lives,” TVCC President Dr. Glendon Forgey said. “One thing is for sure – for the past 65 years the music played by the HCJC/TVCC band has had responsive movements on those who have heard it. And for the past 50 years, the songs sung by the choir have endeared the hearts of all who have listened.”
Events will officially kick off on Thursday, Oct. 16, with the annual Homecoming Carnival on the Athens campus. The carnival will begin at 5 p.m. and will be followed the next day with Spirit Day on campus, when students will wear their Cardinal gear.
On Friday, Oct. 17, the Kevin Till Memorial Rodeo Scholarship Golf Tournament will be held with a shotgun start beginning at 8:30 a.m. at Athens Country Club. The tournament, which is in its fourth year, is played to raise funds for the TVCC Foundation scholarship in memory of Kevin Till, a former TVCC rodeo team member who died of cancer in October 2009. Entry fee is $75 per person or $300 per team. For more information about the tournament or to register, contact Gaylord Walden at 903-675-3844. Deadline to enter is October 1.
On Friday evening, an Alumni Meet & Greet will be held from 7-10 p.m. at Athens Country Club. Heavy hors d’oeuvres will be provided. This is a great opportunity for friends to reconnect and everyone is welcome. There will be no charge for entry and a cash bar will be provided.
Additionally, plans are in the works to invite the classes from the late 1960s including members of the student groups who participated in the Junior Rose Bowl games. Kay Hundley, a Cardette from that era who is organizing the effort, said 35-40 alumni have already committed to attend Homecoming festivities.
“We all have such fond memories of our time here at HCJC, as we knew it then,” Hundley said. “The friendships formed are just everlasting. It’s such a pleasure to see how much the school has grown and all the wonderful opportunities for involvement for the students to take advantage of … and to think we were that young once! It’s always such a pleasure to come back.”
On Saturday, Oct. 18, festivities will begin with the induction of the seventh class of the HCJC/TVCC Cardinal Hall of Fame at a luncheon beginning at 11 a.m. in the Student Union Building Ballroom. Four members will be inducted – Thalamus McGee (men’s basketball, 1993-95); John Owens (football, 1949-50); Scott Tyner (football (1990-91); and Eddie Valdez (football, 1965-66). Tickets for the luncheon are $10 at the door.
The inductees will also serve as honorary captains during the coin toss of that day’s Homecoming football game against Arkansas Baptist. Kickoff is at 3 p.m. at Bruce Field, and various student groups – including current and former members of the band and choir – will be recognized.
For more information, contact the Alumni Office at 903-670-2620.
