Grammy-nominated artist Piccolo to perform at Arboretum
Athens has become a regular stop on the annual performance schedule of Grammy-nominated artist Greg Piccolo. This year will be no different.
Piccolo – a leader, singer and saxophonist for the multi-Grammy Award nominated band Roomful of Blues for 25 years – will make his third appearance in Athens when he performs in concert on Sunday, Nov. 9, at 4:30 p.m. at the East Texas Arboretum and Botanical Society. Admission is free.
Piccolo has performed on Eric Clapton's "Crossroads Guitar Festival 2010" (DVD), Jimmie Vaughan's 2002 Grammy Award winning album, "Do You Get the Blues?" and Stevie Ray Vaughan's "Carnegie Hall Concert" (CD). He has also recorded and/or performed with Pat Benatar, Etta James, Dr. John, Big Joe Turner, Eddie Vinson, J. Geils and Earl King. He has toured internationally with Jimmie Vaughan. They appeared on the "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" show in 2010 and at Lincoln Center in New York City, joined by W.C. Clark, Lou Ann Barton and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame winner, Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top in 2011.
In 2010, Vaughan and Piccolo recorded and released the album, "Plays Blues, Ballads and Favorites," which was nominated for 2011 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album. They also recorded the song, "The Ironic Twist," which was nominated for 1999 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.
In February 2011, Piccolo was inducted into the Rhode Island Music Hall of Fame for his work with Roomful of Blues. He was nominated for W.C. Handy Award and Blues Award for Best Saxophonist.
The East Texas Arboretum is located at the intersection of U.S. Highway 175 and Patterson Road in Athens. The physical address is 1600 Patterson Road.
