Flu shots, precautions offered as cold/flu season nears
The arrival of fall temperatures and cold and flu season serves as a great reminder for students to take extra care regarding good hygiene.
Merely practicing the basics – frequent hand washing and covering your nose and mouth (preferably with a tissue) when you cough or sneeze – can go a long way to keeping a student healthy. Students are also encouraged to keep their bodies fueled right by drinking plenty of fluids, eating a well-balanced diet and getting plenty of rest to keep their immune systems strong.
Students can further protect themselves by avoiding close contact with those they suspect are sick; avoiding touching their eyes, nose and mouth (a common vehicle by which germs are transmitted); and cleaning or disinfecting shared spaces such as computer labs and library tables.
To help keep a healthy campus community, flu shots will be provided in the Student Union Building on the Athens campus on Tuesday, Oct. 21, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Cost is $25 per person, and all students, faculty and staff are welcome to get a shot.
These tips are also useful as health officials disseminate information about the Ebola virus. The first case in the U.S. was reported this week in Dallas County. National and state health care officials say there is no reason to believe the virus has spread beyond the single individual who is being treated. Even so, TVCC students with ties to the Metroplex area or who may be attending the State Fair of Texas in Dallas are urged to practice common-sense precautions similar to the measures outlined above. It is important to note that the virus is not airborne, but is spread from interpersonal contact.
