Making a difference

Sophomores Kopec, Meshack active in SGA

  Kathrina Kopec and Kolby Meshack aren’t just biding their time and waiting for graduation at Trinity Valley Community College. They are making a difference in Student Government Association on local, regional and state fronts.
  Kopec, a nursing major from Mabank, is a member of the SGA at TVCC and also serves as state treasurer. Meshack, a broadcast journalism major from Dallas, is the secretary of the TVCC chapter and editor of the Region 3 bulletin.
  Here’s a brief Q&A with the two sophomores:
KATHRINA KOPEC
 Hometown/School: Mabank/Mabank High School
 Classification: Sophomore
 Major: Nursing
  Q: What do you love about TVCC?
  A: TVCC is exciting and close to home. I love meeting so many new people.
  Q: Why did you join SGA?
  A: I joined SGA because I was invited and wanted to be a part of group. I then realized I was part of a group that served others and that made it more valuable to me.
  Q: What SGA office do you hold? What are your responsibilities?
I am the state treasurer. I keep track of the each college’s dues and help get budget reports ready for the SGA state convention to book everything for convention -- food, entertainment, speakers, lodging.
  Q: How has this helped you grow as a student leader?
  A: Being the treasurer has helped me see the weight of responsibility of a leader and how my vote and work affects all of the students across the state that I am representing.
KOLBY MESHACK
Hometown/High School: Dallas/West Mesquite High School
Classification: Sophomore
Major: Broadcast journalism
  Q: What do you love about TVCC?
  A: I love that TVCC has always given me new experiences and has always been welcoming.
  Q: Why did you join SGA?
  A: I joined SGA because I was SGA treasurer in high school and I wanted to continue that in college.
  Q: What SGA office do you hold? What are your responsibilities?
  A: I am the secretary at TVCC and editor of the bulletin for Region 3 (do all the social media postings and communication).
  Q: How has this helped you grow as a student leader?  
  A: Today we depend so much on social media that it takes effort to reach students and get them involved. I have learned to better communicate and reach out to others.
