Lady Cardinals split season-opening doubleheader

  The Trinity Valley Community College Lady Cardinals split a doubleheader against Hill College in season-opening action Monday at Cain Park.
  Coach Ashley Johnston’s squad scored an 8-2 win in Game 1 and dropped a 7-4 decision in Game 2.
  The Lady Cardinals are scheduled to return to action Friday and Saturday in the annual Cow Town Tournament  in Fort Worth. They play Eastern Oklahoma at 9 a.m. and Butler at 3 p.m. Friday and take on Crowley at 9 a.m., Johnson County at 11 a.m. and North Central Texas at 3 p.m. Saturday.
  The Lady Cardinals are scheduled to be at home again Wednesday, Feb. 11, against McLennan. Action begins at 1 p.m.
  Lithe Pokipala-Waiohu belted a three-run homer run in the first game to fuel the Lady Cardinals at the plate.
  Kaitlynn Allen slapped a pinch-hit, two-run double in the third inning.
  Sami Williams had a solo homer in the fourth inning.
  Mackenzie Robinson went the distance on the mound, allowing just one earned run.
  In the second game, Micah Shaw went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a double. Allen went 1-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs.
  Samantha Sevier pitched into the sixth inning before being relieved by Robinson.
  “Offensively, we didn’t look bad for opening day, but we have to clean things up defensively,” Johnston said. “We had nine errors in the two games.”
