TVCC Celebrates First Annual International Day of Women and Girls in Science

Trinity Valley Community College (TVCC) is proud to host the First Annual International Day of Women and Girls in Science Colloquium on February 11, at the TVCC Pauline Knight Perkins Auditorium (attached to the Administration Building) on the TVCC – Athens Campus.
This inspiring event will feature accomplished women in STEM, sharing their expertise and career journeys to encourage the next generation of scientists, engineers, and healthcare professionals.
“This is a great way to recognize International Day of Women and Girls in Science,” TVCC President Dr. Jason Morrison shared. “We want our female students to feel empowered in any field they are interested in. Don’t let anyone set your limitations - you go after what you desire.”
The colloquium will highlight four distinguished speakers from various scientific disciplines:
- 9:25 - 10:00 AM – “Fully Vetted”
Dr. Lexi Clay, DVM – Associate Veterinarian, Veterinary Medical Center of Athens
- 10:05 - 10:40 AM – “Carla Lacerda – Career Trajectory and Self-Assessment”
Dr. Carla Lacerda – Assistant Professor & Distinguished Teaching Professor, Jasper Department of Chemical Engineering, The University of Texas at Tyler
- 10:50 - 11:25 AM – “Take All the Opportunities”
Dr. Sibyl Rae Bucheli – Professor, Department of Biological Sciences, Sam Houston State University
- 11:30 - 12:05 PM – “Advancing Anatomical Sciences: From Evolution to Emerging Technologies in Healthcare Education”
Dr. Jailenne I. Quinones-Rodriguez – Assistant Professor of Anatomical Sciences, College of Osteopathic Medicine - Conroe, Sam Houston State University
This colloquium aligns with the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a global initiative recognizing the critical role women and girls play in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). TVCC is dedicated to fostering an inclusive learning environment and providing opportunities for students to engage with successful professionals.
“Women are typically underrepresented in the STEM field,” said Dr. John Placyk, TVCC Science Division Chair. “So, this opportunity to celebrate and recognize the women who have entered that field, while encouraging others to consider the field of science.
The event is free and open to the public. Students, faculty, staff, and community members are encouraged to attend and gain valuable insights from these accomplished women in science.
