  • what type of dance team IS the TVCC Cardettes?

The Cardettes are an internationally acclaimed collegiate precision dance team who serve as the talented and beautiful ambassadors of TVCC, Texas and the United States. 

 

  • When were the tvcc cardetteS established?   

   1960

 

  • DOES THE CARDETTE ORGANIZATION PARTICIPATE IN ANY COMPETITIONS?

Cardettes do have a competition team called the Showgirls. Cardette Showgirls are Cardettes who are chosen to be on this elite squad at the end of the fall semester.  They are chosen based on their execution of advanced skills, performance projection, and dance ability. Showgirl’s style is precision jazz, contemporary, fast pom and hip hop. Each year could be different with the style. Showgirls compete annually at the ADTS national’s competition every March in Denton, TX and as well travel to Las Vegas to compete at the DTU competition. Cardettes are the Inaugural DTU college classic national champions from 2017.

 

  • do the cardettes offer scholarships?

yes.  Each Cardette is eligible for a scholarship once all audition materials have been received.  The amount of scholarships given varies on the classification within the organization, rank, and approval from the director.  Once a scholarship is awarded, the Cardette must maintain a 2.0 GPA with 12 semester hours to be eligible for a scholarship the next semester. Cardettes start off at a minimum of $1,600 per semester. As well, there are several other scholarships a Cardette can receive once on the team, from great GPA, becoming a Showgirl, becoming Freshman Representative or Cardette Officer and more.

 

  • DO THE CARDETTES TRAVEL?

Yes.  The TVCC Cardettes are a performance team!  Depending upon funds available and the academic calendar, the Cardettes typically travel out of the state every other year.  The Cardettes travel to most football games as well as march in the State Fair of Texas Parade and the Children’s Parade in Dallas each year and travel to Las Vegas each year for competition.  Cardettes have entertained crowds in Russia, Ireland, Italy, Hawaii, England, Switzerland, France and as well as other places all over the United States Visit the Cardette web site for an extensive list of Cardette past appearances.

 

  • DO I NEED TO PREPARE ANYTHING FOR AUDITIONS?

Yes.  Please check out our website at www.tvcc.edu/cardettes for more audition information. No solo is needed.

 

  • HOW MANY OFFICERS ARE SELECTED?

Cardettes have anywhere from 3- 5 sophomore officers who are chosen at the beginning of their sophomore year.

  • WHEN WILL I FIND OUT IF I MADE CARDETTES?

If you received a Cardette Fast Pass and once all the paperwork is in you will find out online on the Cardette website at the first audition or second audition (depending on when you received your Fast Pass). If attending a one day audition girls will find out that evening at the end of auditions.

 

  • IS THERE A STANDARDS CARDETTES MUST MAINTAIN?

Yes.  Cardettes must be lean, fit dancers who will look appealing in whatever attire they are dancing in whether be the field uniform or a half top.   Cardettes do not go by a specific weight chart but they must have a healthy appearance (Body mass index below 25.0 (healthy category) and appropriate with height and age).  The Cardette Office used www.webMD.com for calculation standards. 

 

  • ARE THERE FRESHMAN CARDETTE OFFICERS?

There are not freshman officer positions available but the team does choose 1 or 2 Freshman Representatives in the middle of the fall semester.  These girls are responsible for certain activities in the spring as well as being the voice of the Cardette Freshman Class. These auditions for freshman rep normally happen mid fall.

 

  • WHAT IS AN AVERAGE CARDETTE COST FOR AN INCOMING FRESHMAN?

TVCC provides each Cardette with a full Cardette uniform and basic equipment.  Each girl is responsible for purchasing all personal items such as make-up, performance boots, tights, and trunks.  Typically, a freshman fall cost is around $300-$350.  A majority of the items purchased for a Cardettes’ first year will carry over into their sophomore year.  During the spring semester, the average cost is between $150-$175 depending upon which numbers and how many numbers a Cardette is in during our annual Cardette Spring Production. 

 

  • WHO DESIGNED THE CARDETTE UNIFORM?

The crisp white uniform and their trademark red hat, was established in 1983 by Director Jean Baker and Choreographer Debbie Baker.  The uniform has not changed since then other than the addition of sleeves to the top and a sliver hat band for the officers.

 

  • ARE THERE ANY TRADITIONS AND DO THEY CHANGE?

The Cardettes are rich in tradition.  Their signature entrance onto the football field has been in existence since the mid 1980’s.  “Deep in the Heart” only changes at the end of the dance depending upon the beginning position for the following dance.  Cardettes are known all over the world for their “thank you” and their smiling red lips.  Cardettes do have big sister/little sister, escorts, and unique traditions passed down from year to year.  Cardettes do not believe in nor encourage hazing of any type.  Cardettes only have two years together and we make our family situation a positive and memorable one.  The best way to find more information on our traditions is to become one of the elite TVCC CARDETTES!

 

  • WHAT IS LIFE LIKE OUTSIDE OF PRACTICE?

All Cardettes become very close and gain so many sisters.  Not only do we practice together; we live, eat, and study together.  Yes, there are times when stress comes into play but overall the sisterhood comes out.  You always have someone to turn to and to help you. 

 

  • DO CARDETTES HAVE REGULARLY SCHEDULED PRACTICES?

Cardette Classes are scheduled between 1-3:40pm on Monday-Thursday and then 8:45am-11:30am on Fridays.  Depending upon which DANC classes you are enrolled in will dictate specific class times.  Cardettes do receive transferable college credit for our practice times.  Freshman Cardettes are required to enroll in Ballet class which is on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Fall semester only.  Cardettes do not have additional practices other than class time unless a special need occurs, which is very seldom.  

 

  • wHAT DOES A NORMAL PRACTICE LOOK like FOR cARDETTES?

Depending on what event Cardettes are preparing for Cardettes will always spend time stretching, working on progressions and technique then preparing for whatever event, football, basketball, competition, show, etc., there is.

 

  • is there a dress code for practice?

Cardettes do have a certain dress code they must follow each day in practice. Some practice attire will be purchased through the Cardette Office in Fall supplies and some practice attire you are allowed to wear your personal dance attire.  This attire must consist of tight half tops, booty shorts, tight fit leggings, and tight fit dance tops to where the directors can see the dancer’s bodies.

 

  • Are Cardettes required to do community service?

Cardettes are required to do two hours of community service a month. They are also required to do workout logs two times per week, which are consisted of cardio and weights to help keep the girls safe when it comes to dancing.

about dorm life, TVCC and Athens

 

  • WHAT IS SCHOOL LIFE LIKE AT TVCC?

The teachers and staff at TVCC are friendly and really care about the well-being of their students.  Classes are small but not too small.  The teachers know you by name and that you are a Cardette.  The classes are challenging to make sure that when a student leaves TVCC and goes to a four year college they are ready to take the next step with a good GPA. 

 

  • DOES TVCC OFFER A DANCE DEGREE? 

TVCC does not offer a degree in dance however we do offer a Dance Pathway for those ladies who desire to continue their college studies in the dance field.  With this Dance Pathway, a student will receive the same courses to qualify them for an Associate’s Degree from TVCC along with dance courses that follow the same path for the first two years at a university in their dance program.  We try our best to make sure every course you take at TVCC is used further down the road and are not wasted hours or time. 

 

  • ARE CARDETTES REQUIRED TO LIVE IN THE DORMS?

YES!  It is a bonding experience for all girls and a part of life one will never forget!

 

  • Which dorm do the Cardettes reside in?

Cardinal Hall, as long as the $225.00 housing deposit is submitted before the waiting list forms.   A waiting list usually begins early in the summer so submit your deposit NOW.   

 

  • WHEN DOES A CARDETTE MOVE INTO THE DORMS?

Cardettes move into their dorms the day prior to Cardette Line Camp in August.

 

  • DOES A CARDETTE HAVE TO MOVE OUT OF HER DORM ROOM EACH SEMESTER?

During holiday breaks and at the end of the fall semester, you are able to leave your belongings in your dorm room.  However, at the end of the spring semester everyone is required to move completely out of their dorm room due to summer school housing and summer camps that are held on campus.

 

  • HOW MANY GIRLS SHARE A ROOM AND HOW MANY SUITEMATES DO YOU HAVE?

Each room houses two young ladies.  The bathroom has a shower and toilet.  Two separate sinks are located in each room and each girl has their own closet.

 

  • IS INTERNET PROVIDED THROUGH THE COLLEGE?

Yes, internet is provided through your TVCC Cardinal account.

 

  • WHAT DO THE CARDETTES DO ABOUT GETTING MAIL AND PACKAGES?

Mail will be sent to the dorm they live in and will be delivered by the dorm director.

 

  • IS THERE TIME FOR A CARDETTE TO HAVE A JOB?

Since Cardettes have regularly scheduled practice times, there is time for someone to hold down an evening job as well as enroll in evening classes.  Cardette schedules are given in advance so that work schedules may be adjusted and evening courses will not conflict.  It is advised, but not mandatory, for an incoming freshman to wait to obtain a job until the spring semester due to the many life changes and adjustments that tend to happen in the fall.  We suggest tackling one thing at a time. 

 

  • WHEN WILL I FIND OUT WHO MY ROOMATE WILL BE?

You will find out who your roommate will be during Cardette Line Camp in August.  Roommate request will be taken at Freshman Mini camp.  Those requests will try to be honored but if you do not receive the roommate that you requested it is advised that you wait until 2 weeks into the semester to request a roommate change.  Be open minded to meet new people.  Past experiences recommend that it is not wise room with your best friend. 

 

  • WHAT IS IT LIKE LIVING IN THE DORMS?

All the Cardettes live on the top 3rd floor of Cardinal hall. It is their home away from home. The girls love getting to be close with all their sisters and be able to constantly have a support system right next door to them or throughout the whole hall. It is only girls on the top floor. They have their own living room in the middle of the hall way which has tables, couches and TV’s so the girls can relax and do homework outside of their room and have extra space. There are washers and dryers as well on their floor for the girls to use. There is a trash room down the hall for girls to take their trash and the dorm director’s office is on the first floor where they have constant support if they need it.

 

  • WHAT DO CARDETTES DO IF THEY WILL HAVE A CAR ON CAMPUS?

Once you arrive on campus in August you go to Campus Police Office to register your car and receive a vehicle sticker.  There are designated parking areas on campus and the ladies dorm parking is adjacent to South and West Halls.  It is required for all vehicles on campus to be registered.  There is not a fee for registration.

 

  • WHAT OTHER ACTIVITIES ARE OFFERED AT TVCC?

Student Senate, Baptist Student Ministries, The ARK, En Croix, Phi Theta Kappa (honor society), Choir, theatre, football, men’s and women’s basketball, cheerleading, band, and rodeo just to name a few. TVCC hosts several event nights as well through the college such as bowling, movie nights and game nights to keep students involved.

 

  • WHEN SHOULD YOU APPLY TO THE SCHOOL AS A FRESHMAN?

As soon as possible just to help push along other things quicker such as paperwork, registering, etc.   If you come to auditions and still have not applied to the college but make the team, you will need to register for the school as soon as possible. 

 

  • HOW MANY CLASSES SHOULD I TAKE MY FIRST SEMESTER?

It is recommended that each Cardette have a minimum of 15 hours their first semester.  This will allow the student to drop a class if needed and still remain a full time student (minimum of 12 hours).  Once a student drops below 12 hours they are not able to live on campus as well as remain eligible for a scholarship for the next semester. 

Out of the recommended 15 hours, 3 credit hours are actually Cardette classes.  Most freshman Cardettes take a history class, English class, visual arts class, and a science class their first semester.  This is only a suggestion and not mandatory that they take these types of classes.

 

  • WHEN DO I REGISTER FOR FALL CLASSES?

It is highly recommended that Cardettes attend the first Freshman Orientation session, which is usually at the end of July.  By attending Freshman Orientation you will receive more one-on-one attention from advisors, opportunity to purchase USED books, and opportunity to sign up for vehicle sticker and campus mail box.  There are certain requirements and a fee to attend Freshman Orientation so check with the guidance counseling office for more information; www.tvcc.edu/guideance.  If you are not able to attend either of the orientations then there is mass registration the week before classes begin. 

 

  • DOES CARDETTES HAVE ESCORTS?

Cardettes do have escorts who are a part of the Cardette family. Escorts attend most all/several of the Cardette practices. Escorts help out in practice playing music, attend Cardette events to help out, participate in the Cardette Spring production and also enroll in a guy’s hip hop class where they get to dance in the end of the year Spring Production. Escorts do receive scholarship and applications can be found online at www.tvcc.edu/cardettes.

 

  • IS THERE A DRess code in academic classes and AROUND TOWN?

Cardettes do have a certain dress code they must follow each day on campus.  Cardettes are first

and foremost respectful ladies who promote themselves in a classy and clean manner.  Not only

are all Cardettes representing themselves and the organization but their families as well at all

times.  Dance attire, yoga pants, half tops, short skirts, slippers, pj pants, sweat pants, etc. are

not acceptable in the academic classroom.

 

  • WHAT TYPE OF RESTAURANTS ARE IN ATHENS?

There are several fast food restaurants such as McDonald’s, What-A-Burger, Chicken Express, Dairy Queen, Sonic, Taco Bell, Arby’s, and KFC to name a few.  We also have other favorite restaurants such a as Applebee’s, Cotton Patch Café, Mooyah Burger, and Jalapeno Tree and local favorites such as Bean & Burger, Ochoa’s Mexican Food, Hunan Buffet, and Rounder’s Pizza. 

 

  • WHAT HOTELS ARE IN ATHENS?

Holiday Inn Express, Best Western Hotel, and Super 8 Motel are the hotels Cardette Families have stayed in on numerous occasions.

 

  • WHAT IS ATHENS BEST KNOWN FOR?

The town hosts several festivals throughout the year.  The town is known mostly for the Fiddler’s Fest, Black Eyed Pea Festival, Fletcher’s Hamburger Cook Off, Christmas Park-Land of Lights, and the Texas Freshwater Fishery.  Recently, Athens has been in a nation wide battle to bring back the title of being the official “Home of the Hamburger.”  Athens is growing every year so the future is bright for such a small town.

 

  • IS THERE A MOVIE THEATER IN ATHENS?

Yes.

 

  • WHAT IS THERE TO DO IN ATHENS?

Athens might be a small town but a very special one. Athens has different restaurants to eat at along with a local movie theater, roller skating rink, and bowling alley. The beautiful East Texas Arboretum and Texas Freshwater Fisheries are located in Athens which are highly recommended for family outings.  There are several different church communities the girls like to get involved with as well there are gyms and a local dance studio.  One unique program TVCC offers our teams are called Cardinal Host Families.  Cardettes are paired up with a host family in town that provides extra support for the girls and a chance to grab a home cooked meal or special family time. The Cardettes really love having that extra connection here in town when being away from home.

 

  • IS THERE A WAL-MART IN ATHENS?

Yes and there is also a Brookshires grocery store.

 

  • IS THERE A DEPARTMENT STORE IN ATHENS?

Yes.  Athens has1 independent department stores – Bealls and there is Tyler (about 40 minutes from Athens) and Mesquite (about 50 minutes from Athens) are where many go to shop at a mall or shop at larger specialty stores.
