Additional Testing Options for Texas and Out of State Students

To meet the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) requirements for enrollment at TVCC or any other Texas public college or university, one of the three exams listed below may be taken in place of the Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA) See THEA website to register www.thea.nesinc.com.

Even if the minimum scores below are not obtained, students will be allowed to enroll at TVCC, but will be required to take developmental coursework until they either retest and pass OR attempt the THEA at least twice and complete all developmental coursework in the subject area (math, reading, and writing) with a passing course grade.  More information about this is available from the Counseling and Testing offices at TVCC.
  • Option #1: COMPASS
    -
    Computerized test from ACT; more information at http://www.act.org/compass/index.html
    -
    Results available immediately if entire test is taken on the computer.  Essay may be done either with the e-write software or paper/pencil.  If the essay portion is done by paper/pencil, plan to take this test as soon as possible since it will be 10 days before essay results are known.
    **Must start the math test at the pre-algebra level; on writing, both the objective portion and essay must be completed.

    COMPASS scores necessary to meet TSI proficiency:
    Reading: 81
    Math: 39 at the Algebra level
    Writing: at least a 59 on the objective portion with a 5 on the essay portion OR a 6, 7, or 8 on the essay
     

  • Option #2: ASSET
    -Paper/pencil test from ACT; more information at http://www.act.org/asset/index.html
    -Scoring options are explained on the website; check with the college/university testing center you plan to test at for which option they use.

    ASSET scores necessary to meet TSI proficiency:
    Reading: 41
    Math: 38 at the Algebra level
    Writing: at least a 40 on the objective portion with a 5 or 6 on the essay portion.  Both scores are required for meeting TSI completion. 
     

  • Option #3: Accuplacer
    -Computerized test from College Board; more information at http://cpts.accuplacer.com/docs/StudentGuide.html
    -Results available immediately. This option is given at TVCC prior to registration for each semester.  

    Accuplacer scores necessary to meet TSI proficiency:
    Reading: 78
    Math: 63 at the Algebra level
    Writing: at least an 80 on the objective portion with a 5 or 6 on the essay portion.  Both scores are required for meeting TSI completion.
     

  • To meet TSI exemption status, the following two tests can be taken with the minimum scores listed below:
    ACT:
    Composite score of 23 or higher with a minimum of 19 on both the English and Math sections
    SAT: Cumulative score of 1070 or higher with a minimum of 500 on both Verbal and Math
