Course DescriptionA review of elementary and intermediate algebra by topics necessary to prepare students to continue with more advanced courses in mathematics.  Topics covered may include:  factoring, simplifying rational algebraic expressions and solving equations using rational algebraic expressions, simplifying exponents and radicals and solving simple radical equations.

Exams:  Three 100 point tests, approximately evenly spaced throughout the semester plus a 100 point Final Exam will be given.  Any unit test may be repeated on a new version of the test in order to achieve a higher grade (and all unit tests must be passed with 70% or higher), but all homework for the unit must be in before any retest and only one retest per week is allowed. Retests are only given during my office hours in my office area – not in class. In addition, not having an overall average of 70% will mean that you must repeat the class with an IP grade or an F grade for this course. An IP grade is earned if you show, by consistent hard work, that you tried your best but were unable to pass one or more tests required.

Homework:    Homework will be assigned for most class meetings and you should ask questions at the beginning of each class about any problems from the previous assignment with which you need help.  Homework assignments will be given by section number (for example Exercise 13.1) but may be assigned in several pieces, taking more than one day to complete a section. Homework on each unit will be turned in with your test on the test day for that unit.  You will receive 1 bonus point on your test grade for each section you successfully complete and turn in on test day.  A successful homework assignment has all assigned problems worked and all necessary steps on each problem shown with only a few errors out of many problems. Therefore you should ask for help if you are not sure that you did problems correctly. The reason for turning in homework at the end of a unit is that you can rework the problems correctly in order to learn the material very well. Remember that the purpose of homework is to help you learn the material by becoming directly involved instead of just observing.

Grading:   Students will need the following totals to receive the respective final grades

            A                       360 – 400
            B                       320 – 359
            C                       280 – 319

            D                       240 – 279

Attendance:  Any student who misses the equivalent of 3 weeks of class meetings will be dropped from class for excessive absence (that is the 6th absence gets you dropped in a daytime class while the 3rd absence gets you dropped in a night class.)  Students who are required to be in a Developmental course to remain in school will be dropped from all classes if they are dropped from their last or only Developmental course.
