ORIENTATION ASSIGNMENT
Due Date – February 23, 2007
1. Take a short timed reading test. You may choose to take it once for practice to see what it is like (click here for the practice run) and then take do the official timed test (click here for the official first test.) You will do a test like this every week and hopefully you will see your reading speed increase over time. There is no minimum speed you must reach for a grade. The whole purpose is for you to be able to gauge your own progress. The only thing that counts for a grade is that you TAKE THE TEST AND REPORT YOUR SCORE IN THE LETTER YOU WRITE TO ME IN PART 2 OF THIS ORIENTATION.
2. Please write a formal letter of introduction with the purpose of introducing yourself to me. Address the letter to:
Mrs. Barbara Gosnell, Instructor
1406 Loma Linda
Athens, TX 75752
Include your name, full mailing address and e-mail address, telephone numbers identified as home and work and/or cellular. In a separate paragraph or two include information about your goals and interests that would help me to tailor your writing assignments to areas of interest for you. It is my fervent belief that education ought to be interesting and relevant to the student. This letter will help to guide that.
Please also include any information you might choose to share about your background or daily life that would help me to understand your learning style preferences or whatever difficulties you feel you might face when you write. If you haven’t explored learning styles in a previous class, please let me know that. Also, let me your reading score from the first speed check.
PLEASE e-mail a copy to me prior to February 23. You may send it through the WebCT class-only e-mail, subject line: Introduction. (or, if you prefer, you may send it through your regular e-mail service to me at: barbara.gosnell@tvcc.edu
A hand-written copy should be sent as well, by regular U.S. Postal Service (snail mail.)
