Introduction:

This course is a required component of your Developmental Reading or Developmental Writing course.

It will consist of a portfolio of your work which should be compiled into a 3-hole folder and mailed to the instructor at the end of class.    The portfolio should consist of both the DRAFT AND FINISHED versions of the lab assignments.   Because the TASP test and other college level work will require that you write in class, the written assignments compiled in the portfolio must be HANDWRITTEN rather than typewritten or word-processed.

If you are taking both Developmental Reading AND Developmental Writing, the assignments for both classes may be included in a single portfolio for submission.

1.      Online office hours:

a.       I will be available for online chat several times during the week.   Please check the posting in your WebCT class for the schedule.   You may leave voice mail at the telephone above and calls will be returned as quickly as possible.

2.      Supplies / Textbook:

No textbook is required for this class as links are provided to online resources.   However, most students will find it extremely helpful to have the following books available to them.

a.       A Writer’s Reference (Fifth Edition) – Diana Hacker  ISBN#0-312-41262-2

b.      A standard dictionary of the English language

3.      Class requirements:

a.       Regular completion of assignments ON TIME

b.      Regular communication with the instructor by e-mail or chat

c.       Respect shown in all posts toward instructor and other students

4.      Grades:

a.       Whether you are ready to progress to the next level of English will be determined by improvement in the writing assignments given in this class.   This means that in order to be passed to the next course, you must show in your writing that you have mastered competency in proper writing techniques and grammar conventions.

b.      If your writing shows that you are able to go on to the next class, you will receive a grade of A, B or C based on all the assignments you have done and on the grade you have received in the writing lab (your completed portfolio.)   A grade of D is not given in Developmental Writing I classes.

c.       A student whose work is below C level will receive a grade of IP, which indicates a need for continued work in the course.   A student who does no work, misses too many assignments or turns in work which is not his own will receive an F.

d.      Please be aware of the college rules for withdrawing from a class.  The STUDENT is responsible for withdrawing by the appropriate date to avoid a failing grade if no work is done in the class.  If you were REQUIRED to take this class, withdrawal may cause you to lose credit for all other coursework in progress at the time.  Please check with the Counseling office prior to withdrawing.

5.      Absences:

a.       State law requires that students enrolled in Developmental Writing participate in required remediation.  This course will require completion of assignments ON TIME as evidence of attendance in class.    Therefore a student who fails to submit an assignment on time will be considered to have been “absent” for that assignment.   An accumulation of 4 “absences” (missed assignments) will result in your being automatically withdrawn from all classes at TVCC.     Please do not request that I make an exception for you.  This would be unfair to students who have been faithful in their work habits and submission of assignments.

If you will not be able to complete an assignment because of an emergency, send me an e-mail or leave a voice mail and I will circle that grade in my records.   This emergency will be considered in the accumulation of absences.     Difficulty with your computer at home or your internet service is NOT considered to be an emergency.    Please make immediate arrangements to work at another computer, perhaps in the library on the nearest TVCC campus.

In addition, you will not receive credit for this LAB component unless the required portfolio is RECEIVED BY THE INSTRUCTOR BY THE DUE DATE.
