Course Introduction

As a science of society and human interaction Sociology develops our understanding of how we are woven into the fabric of our society. It aids us in understanding what is happening about us and what social forces are coming to bear upon us. By gaining a firm foundation in basic sociological principles we can discover a vital and exciting field of study.

Sociology is defined as the scientific study of society, including the relationships between people and patterns of social life.

General Objectives

Sociology 1301 will attempt to acquaint the student with the terminology, classifications, methods, trends, and literature, which are peculiar to the discipline. It will introduce the student to the scientific method, learn fundamental principles, generalizations or theories and help the student to become objective in his study, research, and analysis. Second, it will stimulate the student to become interested in the discipline of sociology. Third, it will help the student to discover the implications of the course material for understanding your interests, talents, and values. Fourth, it will help the student practice the skill of writing.

Course Specmcs

Unit I will consist of a general introduction to the study of sociology as a science. This unit will introduce terms, techniques of data collection, and practical uses of sociology. Chapter 1 and 2 are the chapters included in this unit.

The second unit consists of four chapters dealing with the components of culture and the process of joining that culture. Chapters 3, 4, 5, and 6 are the chapters in this unit.

Unit III takes up how we as individuals are divided up in our society and other societies as well. The criteria examined will include social economic, and physical characteristics such as

income, sex, age, and education. Chapter 8&9 will be the chapter used for this topic.

Unit IV will deal with collective behavior and social change. Ideas such as rumor, panic, and hysteria will be explored as well as theories about change. Chapter 20 will be the major area of study for this unit.

Unit V will deal with the five basic institutions of our society. The family, education,

religion political order, and economic order will be studied in depth. Chapters 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17 will be the focus of this unit.

Test Requirements

The methods of writing, administering and grading of tests given in this course are left up to the discretion of this instructor. There will be a sufficient number of tests to fairly obtain a grade for the student. These will be given at the discretion of the instructor. You are responsible for information given in class, in the text or in films on the test. No grades will be posted or given out over the phone.
