Sophomore Exception Procedure

According to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, a high school student must have completed their sophomore year and shall not enroll in more than two college credit courses each semester without prior approval from the Vice President of Instruction.

The TVCC Sophomore Exception Procedure is:

Student must be TSI Complete on all sections of Reading and Writing, if they are enrolling in anything other than Math (i.e. SAT, ACT, STAAR, TSI Assessment)

Student must be TSI Complete in Math, if they are enrolling in any Math course (i.e. SAT, ACT, STAAR, TSI Assessment) 

Student must possess a GPA of a 3.0 or above

Student must present an original signed letter of recommendation from the high school principal

Student must meet all TVCC admission requirements

Student must meet with TVCC officials for an interview

Students are only allowed to enroll in a maximum of two (2) courses while they are Sophomores

Student must provide the following documentation:
  1. Most recent test scores
  2. Copy of high school transcript
  3. Letter of recommendation from principal

Dual credit students are limited to two TVCC courses per semester. Beginning dual credit students may obtain special approval from the Vice President of Instruction to take three courses per semester if the student has maintained at least a 3.0 GPA or B average at the high school. Returning students may obtain special approval from the Vice President of Instruction to take more than two courses per semester if the student has maintained at least a 2.0 GPA or C average in TVCC all of their courses.  Students approved to enroll in more than two courses may only enroll in a maximum of 15 semester credit hours.
