Course Description

This course deals with the origins of American Law, contracts, personal property, bailments, negotiable instruments, insurance, partnership, corporation and real property.

This course is a requirement in completing the Associate of Applied Science Degree with a major in Accounting and in Business and Office Administration in the certificate for Accounting and it can be used as an elective for other programs.

Instructional Strategies

The instructional methods primarily used in this course shall be lecture and demonstration. The instructor shall lecture over the basic principles of the course, and shall invite class discussion and input. Films and filmstrips shall be used when appropriate to the materials being covered. Guest lectures shall be used when available.

Course Description

Course Goals

  1. To acquire an understanding of business law and its terminology.
  2. To develop desirable attitudes toward the law as it applies to business.
  3. To understand how the principles of the law are applied to personal, business, governmental, and social activities, and how each of these activities affects the law.
  4. To appreciate the function of the law in a free enterprise system and in a democratic society.

 

Requirements

Outside Writing Assignments: each instructor may require outside writing assignments. The subject matter of these writing assignments shall be topics that are consistent with the subject. When outside writing assignments are made, the instructor shall provide each student with a handout detailing the requirements for the assignment.

 

Instructional Strategies

The instructional strategies include the following:

Instructor activities involving lectures, presentations with overheads, demonstrations, guest speakers, student activities involving active listening, note taking, discussions, and open-ended case studies.

 

Instructor Responsibilities

As your instructor, I will attempt to: keep you informed of when I cannot be in my office during the stated times; meet with you at other times if for some reason you cannot meet or see me during regular office hours; provide a quality learning environment that will help you to attain course objectives; communicate clearly for the course; come to class prepared and organized; maintain confidentiality of your grades and other information you share with me in confidence; implement class policies fairly and consistently. Students will have the opportunity to evaluate the course using the faculty evaluation

 

 

 

 form. If you leave a message on my answering machine, please state your name, time, and date you called, and a note on the reason for the call. Be sure to clearly state the number where I may reach you.

 

Evaluation/Grading Test Methods

Major Exams: Major exams shall be given throughout the course at the end of the various units of study. The student shall be given a copy of this minimum competency at the beginning of the semester. Additionally, the student will be given a handout at the beginning of the semester which will identify to the students the units of study and the chapters of the textbook from which each of the major exams will be taken. Well in advance of each major exam, the instructor shall inform the students as to the type of exam that will be given. The exams could consist of true/false, multiple choice, matching, short answer, essay, or any combination of these.

 

Final Exam: The final exam shall be comprehensive over everything covered during the semester. It shall be in the format that is consistent with other exams given during the semester.

 

Attendance and Behavior

Attendance General Policy

Class attendance is mandatory. Regular class attendance is essential for successful completion of the course and the earning of credit. Attendance is the greatest predictor of your success in this course. This instructor gives all/most information in class lectures and in-class handouts. If a student must be absent, report the situation in advance. Class attendance will be come part of each student’s permanent record. Absences will adversely effect a student’s grade. If a student’s progress is being hampered due to absences, the situation will be reported to administration. A student on scholastic or disciplinary probation should not have any absences. Students are considered to be in attendance for class if they are present at roll call and stay until class is dismissed by the instructor.
