COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

Under the supervision of the college and the employer, the student combines classroom learning with on-the-job experience in the field of business and office management occupations.  Internship is open only to students enrolled in the Associate in Applied Science Degree program.  Lab Fee:  $10.  Prerequisite: Sophomore classification and consent of the instructor.

 

REQUIRED TEXT:

 

TEXT NOT REQUIRED.  Students will need to use supplemental materials provided by the instructor and the Learning Resource Center to complete projects.

 

COURSE GOALS

 

This course provides on-the-job experience (lab) in the field of business and office occupations.  Students then discuss and explore related problems during a scheduled seminar. These jobs, when approved by the instructor of business and office management occupations, will serve as laboratory for the student.

 

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

 1.   To prepare students at community college levels for beginning business and office occupations positions.

 2.   To perform at least ten of the duties on the attached list to the satisfaction of both employer and instructor.

 3.   To maintain the requirements of the school.

 4.   To work a minimum of 15 hours weekly in the office where employed.

 5.   To abide by all rules and regulations set forth by the employer.

 6.   To accept and fulfill the job responsibilities assigned to him/her to the best of his/her ability.

 7.   To accept the remuneration as agreed upon at the outset of his/her employment.

 8.   To develop initiative and competence so the student will be able to adjust to future changing conditions.

 9.   To acquaint students with opportunities, demands, and rewards of careers in business and office management.

10.  To develop within the student a desire for continuous growth both professionally and individually.

11.  To develop ideals, Habits its, an attitude that will be useful on a business and office position and in everyday living as well.

12.    To encourage students to make a contribution to the business economy of our country by ethical participation in an area of endeavor which is meaningful and personally rewarding.


REQUIREMENTS

 

A.  Complete journal of work experiences

B.  Must perform at least ten of the duties specified by the instructor. (Attached list)

C.  Must complete one project each semester in which the student is enrolled in a business and office management seminar. (Sample projects listed below)

D.  Must obtain written evaluation completed by the employer.       

E.  Must attend seminar class sessions to discuss work experiences and problems.

 

INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES

 

Fifteen hours of seminar to discuss work experiences and problems. 

Individual assistance to be given on related projects.

Visitation by instructor to student’s place of employment.

Final evaluation to be conducted by employer.

 

EVALUATION POLICIES:

 

Written evaluation completed by the employer.

Journal of work experiences: to be completed by the student during seminar meetings. (Must perform at least ten of the duties on the attachment.)

Project: One project will be completed by the student each semester they are enrolled in a business and office management co-op seminar.(Sample project listed below)

 

GRADING SYSTEM: 

 

The following grading scale will be administered:

 

A         90 - 100          D         60 - 69

B         80 - 89            F          59 and below

C         70 - 79

 

Value given to methods of evaluation:

Employer evaluation:                                   1/3 of total grade

Office Duties Journal(Check Sheet)          1/3 of total grade

Project:                                                          1/3 of total grade

 

PROJECT IDEAS:

 

1.   Briefly describe your career goal?

2.   Briefly discuss one of the articles you chose to report on concerning your area of interest.  Please include in your answer why it was interesting to you.

3.   List some advantages to be gained by using a time log periodically and by setting goals and objectives in your work.

4.   What specific situation involving your job do you now view differently than you did when this course began?

5.   Please list the topics that were discussed in class that interested you the most.  You may also include suggestions.

6.   Complete Learning Objectives Worksheet listing goals to accomplish and methods used to accomplish the stated goals.
