PRINCIPLES OF FEEDS AND FEEDING

 

 

INTRODUCTION:

 

This course is designed to acquaint you with the basic principles of animal nutrition and the application of these principles in the feeding of the various feeds and additives to beef cattle, dairy cattle, horses, sheep, and swine.

 

OBJECTIVES & COMPETENCIES:

 

Upon completion of this course you will be able to:

 

  1. Understand the nutritional requirements of livestock.
  2. Understand the nutritive value of different feeds and feed additives.
  3. Formulate efficient feed rations for the various types of livestock.
  4. Apply modern feeding practices and nutritional principles to livestock feeding programs.

  1. Books and documents are available in the College Library (LRC) and in the Agriculture Reading Room, along with many web sites on the Internet. 

 

Notebook:  It is suggested that the student keep one for their own personal use.

 

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

 

  1. Attend class and lab sessions regularly and participate in discussions, class projects, and laboratory exercises.
  2. Take the four (4) major exams, turn in two (2) industry related abstracts, turn in each laboratory assignment, complete a year-round nutritional program and take the final exam as scheduled.

 

 

 

 

 

SEMESTER GRADE COMPUTATION:

 

Semester grades will be determined on the following basis:

 

  1. Your presence, class participation, interest, and lab assignments will count 15% of your grade. 
  2. Each major exam will count 10%.
  3. Two technical abstracts will count 15%.
  4. The final exam will count 20%.
  5. Year-Round nutritional program will count 10%
