Dr. Joy Richmond - Theatre Department Director
Dr.
Joy D. Richmond is a
teacher-scholar, director, theatre generalist, and historian
whose area of specialization is Irish theatre history. She
received her PhD in theatre from the University of Kansas in
2007, her Master’s (1999) and Bachelor’s (1997) degrees from
Texas A&M University-Commerce, and her Associate’s degree from
Kilgore College (1995).
She was the
Theatre Instructor for Haskell Indian Nations University during
the 2008-2009 school year, where she also served as the director
of the nationally acclaimed Thunderbird Theatre, the oldest,
continuously running Native American theatre in the United
States. She has also taught various theatre and speech courses
at the University of Kansas, Texas A&M University-Commerce, and
Highland Community College (Kansas). She has published articles
in the
New England Theatre Journal
and
Texas Theatre Journal
and was the managing editor of the
Journal of Dramatic Theory and Criticism
(2002-2007). Dr. Richmond has also worked as a professional
managing editor for several scientific, medical, and engineering
journals.
Dr. Richmond has directed and/or stage managed more than
25 productions, including
A Tuna Christmas
for Trinity Valley Community College, Joseph Dandurand’s
Please Do Not Touch the Indians,
Paula Vogel’s
Desdemona: A Play about a Handkerchief,
Eve Ensler’s
The Vagina Monologues,
two original one-act plays for the English Alternative Theatre
at the University of Kansas, and Mozart’s
Cosi Fan Tutte
and
Don Giovani.
She was co-founder and producer of the Women’s Play Festival
(2002) and the Ten-Minute Play Festival (2003) at the University
of Kansas and the Thunderbird Theatre Festival (2009) at Haskell
Indian Nations University. She has a strong affinity for theatre
design on a number of fronts, having designed costumes, sound,
and posters/programs for a number of shows. Dr. Richmond is also
a jazz singer.
