Private Guitar Instruction I – MUAP 1261/1262

This course is designed for private instruction on the guitar between instructor and student. Beginning students, as well as those who have experience playing the guitar, are encouraged to enroll. Students will have the opportunity to learn the guitar from an experienced performance artist and teacher from a classical guitar technique perspective. Topics cover reading music in the first position on the guitar and understanding music notation with its relationship to the instrument. Additional topics also include technique, theory, and the chronological evolution of the guitar. Materials required: an acoustic guitar (a nylon-string classical guitar is recommended), a tuner, a footstool, Classic Guitar Technique Vol. I by Aaron Shearer.


Private Guitar Instruction II – MUAP 2261/2262

The successful completion of MUAP 1261 & MUAP 1262 is the pre-requisite for enrollment in the sophomore guitar instruction. Students enrolled in the second years of lessons are in preparation for auditions at the university level as classical guitar performance majors. Performance in recitals at the college are required. Lesson topics will include a continuation of music reading on the guitar in all positions. The student will be expected to demonstrate a more advanced understanding of music notation in relationship to the instrument. Advanced technique, theory, and the chronological evolution of the guitar are topics that will be included. Materials required: a nylon-string classical guitar, a tuner, a footstool, Classic Guitar Technique Vol's. I & II by Aaron Shearer. Supplemental music will also be given to students in lessons as determined by the instructor.


Guitar Class I

This course is designed as a classroom setting for learning the guitar from a classical guitar technique perspective. Beginning students, as well as those who have experience playing the guitar are encouraged to enroll. Students will have the opportunity to learn music reading in the first position on the guitar, as well as understanding music notation in relationship to the instrument. Technique, theory, viewing concert performance videos, and the chronological evolution of the guitar are topics students will learn in the course. Materials required: an acoustic guitar (a nylon-string classical guitar is recommended), a footstool, a tuner, and the method book: Classic Guitar Technique Vol. I by Aaron Shearer.

 

Guitar Class II

This course is designed as a classroom setting for learning the guitar from a classical guitar technique perspective.  A pre-requisite for enrolling in this course is that students must have successfully completed the guitar class level I (MUSI 1192). Students will have the opportunity to learn music reading in the first and second position on the guitar, as well as understanding music notation in relationship to the instrument. Technique, theory, viewing concert performance videos, and the chronological evolution of the guitar are topics students will continue to learn throughout the course. Materials required: an acoustic guitar (a nylon-string classical guitar is recommended), a footstool, a tuner, and the method book: Classic Guitar Technique Vol. II by Aaron Shearer.

 

Guitar Ensemble

Enrollment in this course is by audition only. The ability to read music on the guitar in the first position, as well as performing on the instrument from a classical guitar technique perspective are pre-requisites for enrolling in the ensemble. Ensembles will be arranged as guitar duets, trios, and quartets based on the number of students enrolled. The ensembles will perform music from different musical periods such as the Baroque, Classical, & 20th century as well as perform guitar music from different countries as Brazil, Argentina, North America, Australia, Asia, and Europe. The ensembles will perform on-campus as well as the Athens community and the general North Texas region! Materials required: An acoustic guitar (nylon-string classical guitar is recommended), a tuner, a footstool, Classic Guitar Technique Vol.'s I & II by Aaron Shearer, The Guitar Ensemble: A Collection. 6th edition. by Randall Nye.
