Course Description:

 

This course emphasizes the managerial functions of planning, organizing, staffing, directing and controlling.  Communication, motivation, leadership, and decision-making are included.

Course Learning Outcomes:

          The student will acquire an understanding of the following course learning outcomes:

  • Explain the basic managerial process;
  • Discuss how environmental factors, ethics and social responsibility, and the global environment affect management;
  • Discuss “how to make things happen” in an organization including planning, decision making, managing information, and controlling;
  • Describe how to “meet the competition” through global management, organizational strategy, innovation and change, and designing adaptive organizations;
  • Organize people, projects, and processes;
  • Describe the leadership skills needed to be an effective manager, including motivating employees and managing communication.

What Do I Do First? 

Once you log in, select the syllabus icon and print the course syllabus.

            Next, select the Unit Assignments icon and print them for Units 1 – 3.

            Click on the other icons on the homepage and read the data and instructions given.

            Then, begin reading the chapters and working the assignments.

 

Course Format:

This course is divided into three units:

Unit 1:  Chapters 1 - 4

Mid-Term Project

Unit 2:  Chapters 5 – 9

Unit 3:  Chapters 10 – 14

 


Testing/Final Grade:

 

The course will include three objective examinations, and a mid-term project and unit assignments (containing two assignments in each unit, which includes a total of 6 assignments).

 

Course Grading Method:

 

The final grade for each student will be determined using the point system.

 

Each major unit assessment and final project will be worth 200 points for a total of 800 points. Assignments will consist of 6 exercises (worth 40 points each) and will total 240 points.  Total possible points will be 1040. Final grade will be determined using the following scale:

 

A =     931 – 1040

B =     827 –   930

C =     723 –   826

D =     619   722

F =     below 619

 

Note:

Homework and Unit Assessments must be taken by the deadlines listed on the course calendar posted on the Principles of Management course site. Print the calendar to refer to throughout this semester.

 


Drop Date Policy:

 

If the student needs to drop a course or withdraw from the college, you must complete an official drop form from the Guidance Office to withdraw from this course or contact the VCT coordinator at your college by the June 26, 2008 drop date.

                  Interview one practicing manager and complete steps 1 and 2

 

MID-TERM PROJECT:  (2 PARTS) 

A.     Internet Activity:  Personality Type

·        Take the free on-line Myers-Briggs type Indicator (MBTI) test at

            www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/JTypes2.asp.  This is a 72-question test

            that should take you no longer than 10-15 minutes to complete.

            Submit the test and find out what MBTI type you are.

·        Read about your type.  What are some of the strengths of your personality style as it involves the workplace?  What are some of your weaknesses?

   

            B.  Develop Your Managerial Potential (Ch. 5, page 164)

·        “What Do You Want To Be When You Grow Up?”

·        Read this assignment. Write a personal career plan by answering questions 1-4

           On pages 164:  Write the questions, then your response.

 

 

Unit II

        A.  Internet – Cross-Cultural Training

Browse the internet for different cross-cultural training packages that are for sale. Select two good packages and provide a summary of what the training encompasses. Would you buy this package for your company’s training program? Why or why not?

       B.  Chapter 9, Internet Activity: Job Characteristics Model

Go to www.monster.com and pick out three different jobs that sound interesting to you. Using a scale of 1-5 (1 being poor and 5 being excellent), rate each job on the following characteristics:

1) Skill variety

                         2) Task identity

      3) Task significance

Then add the scores. Which was the best? Is this the type of job you would prefer? Why or why not?

     A.  Chapter 13, Page 446:  Develop Your Career Potential

Read the exercise, “Cut Your Costs, Not Your Morale”

Then answer questions 1 - 4. Write the question and then your response.

     B.  Chapter 14, Page 482: Develop Your Career Potential

Read the assignment titled “Leadership Revisited.” Use some of the internet resources listed on page 482 to deepen your understanding of your leadership style and potential. Answer the 5 questions that follow on page 482. Write the question and then your response.
