Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

A.        Learn to operate by touch the alphabetic, number, and symbol keys.

B.        Learn to operate by touch the ten-key numeric keypad.

C.        To achieve his highest speed/accuracy levels by the end of the instruction period on a 3-minute timed typing.

Method of Evaluation

The final grade will be determined by the following criteria:

Five three-minute timings from Sessions 18-24, & 28-30 using the following scale:

            A = 35+ words per minute; error limit 5

            B = 30-34 wpm; error limit 5

            C = 25-29 wpm; error limit 5

            D = 20-24 wpm; error limit 5

            F = 19 and below; error limit 5

The student’s five best 3-minute timings will be used for grading purposes. The student’s five best timings must be from different Sessions. These timed typing tests can be taken on a home computer and submitted as assignments from the WebCT site.

If the student can not attain the 5 error limit, 2 wpm will be deducted for each error over the 5 error limit. At least four of your timings that will be used for grading, must be within the 5 error limit.

The 5 timed typing grades will be averaged to get the Final Grade.

Academic Dishonesty

Academic dishonesty (cheating on an assignment or test) will not be tolerated in this class. If the instructor finds a student or students cheating, a grade of zero will be given for that assignment/test and could result in a grade of zero for the entire unit of work. Examples of academic dishonesty are, but not limited to:

§         Letting someone copy your assignment/test.

§         Substituting for another student, or permitting another student to substitute for oneself, to take a test.

§         Knowingly using another person’s disk and submitting work from the disk as your own.

§         Giving your data disk to someone for whatever reason to look at or use your work.

§         Working on an assignment/test with a classmate or someone else. You must complete your own work.

§         Copying someone’s file and changing a few items and submitting it as your own.

If a student lets another student copy from them, then both students will receive the same punishment.

Working on Lessons/Exercises

If your goal for the course is to LEARN TO TYPE or relearn the keyboard then you need to start with lesson one and type each drill twice and proceed through the lessons from 1 to 20. Follow the Friday Due Dates on the calendar.

If your goal for the course is to INCREASE YOUR SPEED AND ACCURACY then you need to go to Lesson 11 and spend most of your time on the timed typing drills in each lesson from Lessons 11 to 20. The last drill in each lesson is a 2-minute timed typing drill. Follow the Saturday Due Dates on the calendar.

No matter what your goal for the course is, you need to submit your timed typing scores from Lessons 11 to 20. Your best timing from Lessons 11-15, your best timing from Lesson 16-19, and your best timing from Lesson 20 will be averaged to get your final grade. The following scale will be used:

·         A = 35+ words per minute; error limit 5

·         B = 30-34 wpm; error limit 5

·         C = 25-29 wpm; error limit 5

·         D = 20-24 wpm; error limit 5
