Course Title:                 Advanced Word Processing

 

Course Number:            POFI 2440

 

Prerequisites:              a. POFI 2401 – Word Processing I or knowledge of basic features of Word 2007.

                                    b. Internet connection with an e-mail address.

                                    c. Microsoft Word 2007 software. If you do not have Word 2007, it must be purchased before you can take the course.

 

Course Description:

 

A continuation course designed to provide experience producing complex documents using advanced word processing functions of Word 2007 software. Students will continue to develop accuracy, formatting, and document production skills. Emphasis is placed on learning and applying word publishing and macro functions while applying proofreading and editing skills. All assignments will be completed in Word 2007.

 

This is not a self paced course. There are due dates for the assignments. Starting with week two, there are assignments due each week. There are also cut off dates. These are the dates that the assignments will no longer be accepted.

 

Tests will be Proctored

 

You will have to come to the Athens campus to take Part 6 Theory Checkup. The online Theory Checkup for Part 6 can be taken at the Testing Center on the Athens campus or at the LRCs on the Athens, Terrell, or Palestine campuses.

 

VCT Students: You will go to the testing center of the college you are enrolled in to take Part 6 Theory Checkup. Contact the testing center early in the semester to see if you have to make an appointment to be tested.

Course Completion Requirements

 

·        Read the assigned chapters before starting on the assignments.

·        Complete all the exercises in each chapter.

·        Submit the assignments when due.

·        Submit the tests when due.

·        Be aware of the due dates and cut off dates and abide by them.

·        Do not get behind. Check calendar for due dates.

 

3 Units or Modules in the Course

 

The student will work through 3 units or modules to complete the course. At the end of each unit, the student will take a test. The unit grade will consists of the following:

 

      a. Theory Checkup (Multiple Choice type questions - online)

      b. Performance Assessment (3 problem assignments)

      c. Skill Assessments (Assigned problems from Text – daily grade: prerequisites and assigned problems)

      d. Photo for class roll (Module 1 only)

 

Due Dates and Cut Off Dates

 

      There is a due date and a cut off date for each week’s assignments.

 

      Unit 4   - Unit 4 Performance Assessment available the entire 5th week.

                  - Unit 4 Performance Assessment due end of 5th week.

            - Weekly assignments should be turned in weekly. Check calendar for due dates and cut off dates. (Cut off date is the date the weekly assignments will no longer be accepted.)

                  - No work accepted for Unit 4 after end of 5th week.

 

      Unit 5   - Unit 5 Performance Assessment available the entire 10th week.

                  - Unit 5 Performance Assessment due end of 10th week.

                  - Weekly assignments should be turned in weekly. Check calendar for due dates and cut off dates. (Cut off date is the date the weekly assignments will no longer be accepted.)

                  - No work accepted for Unit 5 after end of 10th week.

 

      Unit 6   - Unit 6 Performance Assessment available the entire 15th week.

                  - Unit 6 Performance Assessment due end of 15th week.

                        - Weekly assignments should be turned in weekly. Check calendar for due dates and cut off dates. (Cut off date is the date the weekly assignments will no longer be accepted.)

                  - No work accepted for Unit 6 after end of 15th week.

 

If Units 4 & 5 are not completed and turned in by Drop Day, the instructor MAY drop the student from the course.

 

 

 

Computer Time Required

 

Approximately four to six hours per week of computer time is recommended to complete assignments.

 

Grading

 

      40% of final grade = Skill Assessments (All Graded Assignments).*

      40% of final grade = Performance Assessments (3 unit assessments).

      20% of final grade = Three theory checkups.

        5% of Part 4 grade = Photo for class roll.

 

      *A perfectly completed prerequisite exercise will receive a score of 1.0 point and a perfectly completed assignment will receive a score of 4.0 points. A half-point (0.5) will be deducted for each error.

 

      Scale for completed assignments:

 

0 errors - 4.0                                  4 errors - 2.0                            8 + errors – 0.0

1 error   - 3.5                                  5 errors - 1.5                           

2 errors - 3.0                                  6 errors - 1.0                         

3 errors - 2.5                                  7 errors - 0.5

 

The student will receive points for graded assignments, 3 theory checkups, 3 performance assessments, and class roll photo.

 

      POINT SCALE:

 

      A = 1365-1525    B = 1213-1364     C = 1060-1212     D =  908-1059    F =  907 & below

 

Academic Dishonesty

 

Academic dishonesty (cheating on an assignment or test) will not be tolerated in this class. If the instructor finds a student or students cheating, a grade of zero will be given for that assignment/test and could result in a grade of zero for the entire unit of work. Examples of academic dishonesty are, but not limited to:

 

§         Letting someone copy your assignment/test.

§         Substituting for another student, or permitting another student to substitute for oneself, to take a test.

§         Knowingly using another person’s disk and submitting work from the disk as your own.

§         Giving your data disk to someone for whatever reason to look at or use your work.

§         Working on an assignment/test with a classmate or someone else. You must complete your own work.

§         Copying someone’s file and changing a few items and submitting it as your own.

 

If a student lets another student copy from them, then both students will receive the same punishment.

 

 

 

Identifying Your Work

 

As you complete each assignment, put a footer/header on the first page of the assignment. The footer should include your name, chapter number, and assignment number.
