COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

This is an introductory course designed to present concepts of information/word processing as well as the opportunity to perform basic word processing functions, develop formatting skills, and apply communications skills using Word application software.  Prerequisite: Keyboarding POFT Basic Keyboarding 1429, Computer with internet access, Word 2007 software, and an E-mail address.

 

REQUIRED TEXTBOOK, SUPPLIES AND OTHER RESOURCES

 

MICROSOFT Word 2007, Windows XP Version, Signature Series by Nita Rutkosky, which includes a student CD, (ISBN 978-0-7633-026-7).  Also, each student will need FOUR 3.5 HD disks for assignments or USB (flash, jump or travel) drive. Published by Paradigm Publishing Company, 2007.

 

COURSE GOALS

 

After completing this course the student should be able to:

A.  Demonstrate a basic understand of the information processing cycle, hardware used, and basic terminology.          

B.   Produce and format common office documents such as letters, memos, and reports.

C.   Prepare mailable copy from rough drafts

D.   Combine documents using software features.

E.   Solve common word processing problems.

F.   Generate special sections of documents using software features.

G.   Produce documents of varying sizes.

H.   Demonstrate an understanding of print controls.

 

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:

 

There are 3 Units to be completed: Chapters 1-15

A.  Read the assigned chapters and complete ALL exercises.

B.  Complete and submit skill assessments assignments on time. (Remember to proofread.)

C.  Complete 3 unit theory tests and 3 performance assessments as required.

A perfect assignment will receive a score of 4.0. One–half point will be deducted for omissions or accidental text additions; one-half point will be deducted for each typographical error; one full point will be deducted for each major formatting error.

 

All exercises must be completed in order to satisfactorily complete the course. Submit ONLY the SA’s and PA’s specified on the assignment list for grading. (See assignments and print a copy for your records.)

 

Check with the instructor at least every 2 weeks to determine if work is being received and recorded as assigned.

 

 3 Units or Modules in the Course

 

The student will work through 3 units or modules to complete the course. At the end of each unit, the student will take a test. The unit grade will consists of the following:

 

a. Theory Checkup (Multiple Choice type questions- online)

b. Performance Assessment (3 problem assignments)

c. Skill assessments (Assigned problems from Text – daily grade: prerequisites and assigned problems.)

 

*NOTE: You must have Unit 1 and Unit 2 completed and submitted and  2 Performance Tests and 2 Theory Tests completed and submitted by the official drop date ( the end of Week 11). If you have not finished the first two units by the Drop Date, the instructor may drop you from the class.  If you wish to drop the class, contact the counselor and drop the class by the Drop Date.
