Principles of Geography :
Physical Geography is a three credit hour course studying the relationships between human activities and the global environment. Emphasis is on physical geography with analysis of the sun/earth interaction, the climate, land and water features and mineral, vegetation, water, and animal resources.
Note, this is an Internet course. Internet courses are not for all students. It requires a great deal of self discipline and self motivation. To do well in the class, it is necessary for the student to work on the course material on a regular basis. Though there are no classes to attend, this class does require that you participate all through the course. If you wait to the end to try to do it all, you will not succeed as I will set strict deadlines on when things are due.
Text The textbook is a free online site. http://www.physicalgeography.net/home.html
WebCT Access We are using the WebCT software to communicate with each other. It is important that you get on WebCT and become familiar with it as soon as possible. I will send email through it, there are mandatory discussion rooms (bulletin boards), homework is only available through WebCT, tests will be on WebCT and your paper must be submitted through WebCT.
Access to WebCT can be done through the link on the TVCC homepage. Your user id is your Lastname First letter of First Name and last 4 digits of SSN (eg., mine would be HainzeT1234) Your password is last 4 digits of your SSN (1234). I suggest you change the password to something only you know after initial logon to avoid anyone else getting access to your account.
As soon as you know you are taking the class, send an email to me at the above address, so that I can send you instructions for getting started. Your topic/subject should state that you are taking Geography in the Fall.

Homework
There will be review questions posted in WebCT for each chapter. Doing
these will help you on the exams, but they are not for a grade.
Weekly Discussion Assignment
This course is not
self-paced. You are required to do an
assignment every week.
Every week there will be a discussion assignment. I will post it each Monday. You must respond by midnight the following Sunday. These are short essays, sometimes requiring Internet research, sometimes just your opinion, and sometimes both. I will use responses to these to keep up with attendance. Failure to do one will indicate you did not participate in that week.
Exam Notes
The exams will be multiple choice with one or more essay questions. You will have to use a Test proctor at your local school to take the exams. The exams are password protected. If you have some unusual circumstance that prohibits you from using the proctor at your school, contact me with a suggested proctor for your exams.
Approximately 70% of the grade on exams will come from the book Approximately 30% will come from the discussion rooms in the WebCT site. The essay questions will require that you understand the material in the book as well as the material in the discussion rooms.
Schedule
This will be provided in WebCT as it varies by semester.
