Course title:                  Desktop Publishing for the Office

 

Prerequisite:

a. POFI 2440 (Adv. Word Processing) or knowledge of advanced features of Word 2007 software.

b. Computer with internet access.

c. E-mail address

d. Knowledge of how to create folders and how to download files and unzip the files.

e. MicroSoft Word 2007 software. If you do not have Word 2007, you must purchase it before you can take the course.

 

Course Description:

 

A continuation course designed to provide experience producing complex documents using advanced word processing functions of Word 2007 software. The course is designed to be used by students already familiar with word processing and Word 2007. The course focuses on advanced Word features along with desktop publishing terminology and concepts. Topics to be included are: page layouts, memos, agendas, press releases, letterheads, envelopes, business cards, certificates, calendars, resumes, brochures, promotional documents, web pages, PowerPoint presentations, newsletters, reports, and manuals. All assignments will be completed in Word 2007, with the exception of the PowerPoint presentations which will be created in MS PowerPoint 2007.

 

This is not a self paced course. There are due dates for the assignments. Starting with week two, there are assignments due each week. There are also cut off dates. These are the dates that the assignments will no longer be accepted.

 

 

Tests will be Proctored

 

You will have to come to the Athens, Terrell, or Palestine campus to take Part 3 Theory Checkup. The online Theory Checkup for Part 3 can be taken at the Testing Center on the Athens campus or at the LRCs on the Athens, Terrell, or Palestine campuses.

 

VCT Students: You will go to the testing center of the college you are enrolled in to take Part 3 Theory Checkup. Contact the testing center early in the semester to see if you have to make an appointment to be tested.

 Objectives And Course Goals

 

The primary purpose of this course is to develop skills in critical thinking, decision making, creativity, and to learn the advanced features of Word 2007 and apply the features to desktop publishing. Many applications are designed to reinforce collaborative learning in planning, designing, and evaluating business documents. In many of the applications, basic information is given for a task just as it may be given in a real life situation.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to accomplish the following learning outcomes:

  • Evaluate design elements in a desktop published document for the appropriate use of focus, balance, proportion, contrast, directional flow, consistency, color, and page layout.
  • Produce internal business documents such as signs, fax cover sheets, agendas, memos, and press releases with a variety of typefaces, typestyles, type sizes, and special symbols.
  • Produce business letterheads, envelopes, and business cards using a variety of templates, fonts, ruled lines, and automatic features.
  • Create calendars, CD covers, personal address labels, and award certificates using a variety of graphic features.
  • Produce promotional documents such as flyers and announcements using the Word 2003 Tables and Borders toolbar, Picture toolbar, Drawing toolbar, Microsoft Word Picture editor, and WordArt along with text boxes, pictures, watermarks, lines, AutoShapes, 3-D boxes, shadow boxes, and borders.
  • Create letter-fold and single-fold brochures using a variety of page layouts and design techniques such as drop caps and reverse text.
  • Create specialty promotional documents, such as tickets, postcards, business greeting cards, nametags, and invitations using AutoText, WordArt, labels, and Mail Merge.
  • Create Web home pages and fill-in forms online with hyperlinks using Word 2003 and apply basic desktop publishing concepts to the layout and design of the Web pages.
  • Create onscreen presentations and slides using Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003 and basic design concepts.
  • Create newsletters using students' own designs that incorporate desktop publishing concepts and use Word 2003 features. Students define, create, and incorporate additional design elements into newsletters, such as headers/footers, tables of contents, mastheads, sidebars, pull quotes, kickers, end signs, jump lines, captions, vertical lines, and spot color.
  • Become familiar with the basic features and capabilities of Microsoft Office Publisher 2003 to produce professional-looking flyers, brochures, and newsletters.
  • Build a portfolio of documents and design examples for the student to use when interviewing with a prospective employer.

 

Course Completion Requirements    

                   

·        Read the assigned chapters before completing the assignments.

  •  Complete all the exercises in each chapter.

·        Complete and submit prerequisites exercises and assigned problems on or before due dates.

·        Complete all theory tests and performance assessments on or before due dates.

  •  Be aware of the due dates and cut off dates and abide by them.
  •  Do not get behind. Check calendar for due dates.

 

Computer Time

 

Four to five hours per week of computer time is required for students to complete assignments.

 

Grading

 

The student will work through 3 units in the textbook. The student will receive points for graded assignments, 3 performance assessments, 3 theory tests, and a photo for class roll.

 

Theory Test (online written test) – 50 points - 16%

Daily Assignments – 150 points - 49%*

Problem Tests – 100 points - 32% (Performance assessments.)

Photo for class roll –  25 points - 3% (1st unit only)

 

*A perfectly completed exercise will receive a score of 1.0 point and a perfectly completed problem will receive a score of 4.0 points. A half-point (0.5) will be deducted for each error and each day late.

 Academic Dishonesty

 

Academic dishonesty (cheating on an assignment or test) will not be tolerated in this class. If the instructor finds a student or students cheating, a grade of zero will be given for that assignment/test and could result in a grade of zero for the entire unit of work. Examples of academic dishonesty are, but not limited to:

 

  • Letting someone copy your assignment/test.
  • Substituting for another student, or permitting another student to substitute for oneself, to take a test.
  • Knowingly using another person’s disk and submitting work from the disk as your own.
  • Giving your data disk to someone for whatever reason to look at or use your work.
  • Working on an assignment/test with a classmate or someone else. You must complete your own work.
  • Copying someone’s file and changing a few items and submitting it as your own.

 

If a student lets another student copy from them, then both students will receive the same punishment.

On the assignments to be submitted, enter your name and the assignment title (chapter number, and assignment number) in a footer on the first page.

Due Dates And Test Dates

 

Weekly assignments are due each week (check calendar for exact dates). Weekly assignments should be submitted using the directions under the “Submitting Assignments” icon on the home page of the WebCT site. Weekly assignments have a cut off date, also. This is the date the instructor will no longer accept the assignments.

 

Weekly assignments, Theory Tests, Performance Assessments (Problem tests) are due by the following dates:

 

Unit 1

Theory Checkup 1 and Performance Assessments Test 1 are available the entire 5th week. They are due by the end of the 5th week (work submitted after end of 5th week will receive NO credit.) Weekly assignments must be received on a weekly basis and NOT submitted at the end of the 5th week all at one time.

 

Theory Test 1 and Performance Assessments Test 1 will be taken during the 5th week.

 

Unit 2

Theory Checkup 2 and Performance Assessments are available the entire 10th week. They are due by end of the 10th week (work submitted after end of 10th week will receive NO credit.) Weekly assignments must be received on a weekly basis and NOT submitted at the end of the 10th week all at one time.

 

Theory Test 2 and Performance Assessments Test 2 will be taken during the 10th week.

 

Unit 3

Theory Checkup 3 and Performance Assessments Test 3 are available the entire 15th week. They are due by end of the 15th week (work must be submitted by last class day before FINALS. If received after that day, NO credit given. Weekly assignments must be received on a weekly basis and NOT submitted at the end of the 15th week all at one time. 

 

Theory Test 3 and Performance Assessments Test 3 will be taken during the 15th week.

 

 

NOTE: You must have Unit 1 and Unit 2 daily assignments completed and submitted and the 2 Problem Tests and 2 Theory Tests completed and submitted by the end of Week 11. If you have not finished the first two units by the Drop Date, the instructor MAY drop you from the class.

DIRECTIONS FOR ASSIGNMENTS

 

1.      Save and submit each problem as you complete the assignment.

 

2.      Insert your name, the Chapter number, and Assignment number in a footer on the first page.

    

3.      Submit each problem to instructor as you complete it using the "Submitting Assignments" procedures.

 

4.      Make backups of your data disks.

 

5.      If you have a diskette that has gone bad, and you can’t open a file or can’t submit a file, the only solution is to do the assignment again using another disk.

 

6.      Saying you did the assignment but can’t submit it or can’t open it is NOT an excuse I will accept. YOU MUST SUBMIT EACH PROBLEM TO GET CREDIT—NO EXCEPTIONS! AND THE ASSIGNMENT MUST BE SUBMITTED BEFORE THE CUT OFF DATE, OTHERWISE YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SUBMIT IT.

 

7.      Deadlines for submitting Assignments:

 

Unit 4: Weekly assignments must be submitted by the due dates as shown on the calendar. Unit 4 Theory Test and Unit 4 Performance Assessments Test MUST be completed and submitted by the end of the fifth week. No work for Unit 4 will be accepted after the end of the 5th week.

 

Unit 5: Weekly assignments must be submitted by the due dates as shown on the calendar. Unit 5 Theory Test and Unit 5 Performance Assessments Test MUST be completed and submitted by the end of the tenth week. No work for Unit 5 will be accepted after the end of the 10th week.

 

Unit 6: Weekly assignments must be submitted by the due dates as shown on the calendar. Unit 6 Theory Test and Unit 6 Performance Assessments Test MUST be completed and submitted by the end of the fifteenth week. No work for Unit 6 will be accepted after the end of the 15th week.
