GENERAL COURSE INFORMATION

 

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION

 

            This course is an introduction to the selection, use and potential value of the microcomputer in the home, classroom and business environment.  Emphasis is placed on gaining practical experience with the use of several popular, commercially available software systems.  The topical coverage includes the rudiments of information systems, operation of the IBM compatible microcomputer, Microsoft disk-operating system, word processing, electronic spreadsheets, and database management systems.

 

PREREQUISITE:  No course prerequisites, however, this course assumes computer and Internet literacy.  This course requires self-discipline and self-motivation.

NOTE:  Previous versions of the textbook cannot be used because they do not cover the Office 2007 software release.

 

SUPPLIES AND MATERIALS:

 

You will need a storage media to save your lab work on.  You may use a flash drive or floppy diskettes (if your computer requires them).

 

COURSE GOALS

 

The student will be expected to gain a general knowledge of the operation of an IBM compatible computer and Windows.  Software that the student will use includes word processing, spreadsheet and database management.

·               Study, reading, and listening skills will need to be applied in order to achieve maximum knowledge from this course.

·               Meet deadlines for all tests and lab work assignments.

GRADING SYSTEM:

Grades:         90 - 100  =  A

                  80 - 89.9 =  B

                  70 - 79.9 =  C

                  60 - 69.9 =  D

                  Below 60 =  F

 

INCOMPLETE IN LIEU OF GRADE POLICY:

 

An “INCOMPLETE” is only given in extreme circumstances as stated in the TVCC Student Course Catalog.  Those who believe such conditions exist must submit to the instructor a typed letter stating why you should be given an “INCOMPLETE” grade and when and how you intend to complete the course.  You should include any proof of reason or need with the letter.  The letter must include your social security number and must be signed by you.  Only after the letter and documentation are submitted will a decision be made by the instructor to either grant or deny the “INCOMPLETE”.

ATTENDANCE AND BEHAVIOR

 

ATTENDANCE:

 

Although no formal attendance will be taken, students are required to e-mail the instructor each week so that the instructor knows that the student is still active in the course.

 

You must e-mail your instructor each week and let her know that you are on task and that everything is okay!  To do this, use “Mail” under Course Tools on your e-Courses @ The Valley homepage.

 

·         On the left side of your e-Courses @The Valley screen (under your Course Tools), click  Mail

·         Click on the Create Message button

·         To:  click the Browse for Recipients button, then under “Select Individuals and Groups”, click on the box beside my name under the “To” column. You will see a green check appear in the box.  Now click Save.

·         Subject: Type a reference letting your instructor know what the e-mail is about.

·         Message:  Type your message here.

·         Note that the To, Subject, and Message fields are required.

·         On your “Create Message” screen, click SEND

 

 

The instructor reserves the right to drop a student from this Internet class if the student fails to contact the instructor through the Internet course for two consecutive weeks in a row.    This is solely up to the discretion of the instructor.

 

All students are expected to set aside time to complete all lab assignments and test.  Dates to submit lab assignments and test will be strictly enforced. 

 

It is the student’s responsibility to officially drop a course or verify that the instructor has initiated the drop procedure.  See the counselor at the college that you enrolled at to officially drop from this course.

 

Students that enrolled at Trinity Valley Community College may see a counselor in person to drop this course, or you may fax a request stating that you wish to drop this course. Be sure to also drop the lab.  Fax# 903-675-6209 Attention: Counseling Office.

 

Students that enrolled at other colleges must contact the counselors at the college that completed your enrollment for drop instructions.

HONESTY AND INTEGRITY

 

I live by a very simple code:  I will not lie, cheat, or steal nor will I tolerate those who do.  That means one strike and you are out.  If you cheat in this class, you will either withdraw or receive a grade of F.

 


Cheating includes:

 

a.       Copying another student’s work.

b.      Turning in work/claiming work created by another student.

c.       Using unauthorized materials during quizzes and tests.

d.      Seeking aid from another student during a test.

e.       Knowingly using, buying, selling, stealing, or soliciting, in whole or in part, the contents of a test.

f.       Providing or obtaining images of a test.

g.      Using digital imaging or texting during an assignment or test.

h.      The unauthorized removal, in whole or in part, of a test from the classroom.

i.        Using another student as a substitute during a test.

j.        Bringing another person to obtain a test or information about a test.

 

Bottom line:  You know what cheating is.  Don’t do it.  If you truly do not know what cheating is, please see me.

 

 

DISHONESTY WILL NOT BE TOLERATED IN THIS CLASS.
