DISTANCE=20 LEARNING REQUIREMENTS:

All = students=20 must have access to the internet, an e-mail address, and be = competent in=20 using a computer to navigate the internet. You will need access to = Microsoft=20 WINDOWS XP operating system software. You will also need access to=20 Microsoft WORD 2007 for submitting lab assignments. =

Distance=20 learning courses are designed for the mature, self-motivated person.=20 Internet courses are not for=20 everyone. If you are not a motivated self = starter, I=20 recommend that you not take this course. It has a high dropout = rate,=20 though the grades of the students who complete it are generally very = good.=20 This is not a totally = self-paced course.=20 There are deadlines and consequences for missing the=20 deadlines.

COURSE=20 DESCRIPTION:

A = study of=20 personal computer operating systems. =20 Topics include installation and configuration, file management, = memory=20 and storage management, control of peripheral devices, and use of = utilities.=20 This course will concentrate on the use of windows-based microcomputer = operating=20 systems. Creating, = editing, and=20 managing of data files, path directory structure, operating system = commands, and=20 hard disk management are emphasized.

Letter grades will be determined = according=20 to the following scale:

Testing=20 Policy: There will be 3 major quizzes each worth 100=20 points. The quizzes will = be=20 multiple choice. No makeup quizzes will be given!=20

You are responsible for the material in the book. Quizzes will = be taken=20 using Blackboard. These may be taken without a proctor.

Assignments/Testing Schedule: You are=20 expected to read each assigned project prior to discussing it with = the=20 instructor. Assignments, and testing schedule and instructions will be = posted on=20 Blackboard. Assignments=20 can only be turned in before the cutoff date assigned. To receive full credit, all = assignments=20 must be submitted on time. Assignments turned in after cutoff dates = are=20 considered late. = Assignments turned=20 in after cutoff dates will not receive credit. No lab assignments are=20 dropped.

Preparing for Examinations:

Read and work the = chapters=20 assigned. At least 90% of = the=20 questions are taken directly from the reading material. Review the Chapter Summary = section at=20 the end of each chapter and step through the questions at the end of = each=20 chapter.

ATTENDANCE:

Students are required to e-mail = the=20 instructor each week so that the instructor knows that the student is = still=20 active in the course.

You must e-mail me each week and = let me=20 know that you are on task and that everything is okay! To do this, use =93Mail=94 under = Course Tools=20 on your e-courses@ The Valley homepage.

Withdrawal=20 Policy: = If you=20 decide not to finish this course, it is up to you, the student, to = officially=20 withdraw from the course. You may do so by contacting the counselors=92 = office at=20 903-675-6350 or by going by the guidance/counseling office on one of the = campuses. I will not drop any internet = student=20 from class.

Appeals=20 Policy: To appeal a grade, send an = e-mail to=20 your instructor's e-mail address within one week of the grade having = been=20 received. Overdue appeals will not be considered.

On the MY Blackboard (your name) page, you will see a = link to=20 your course. Click on it and you will be taken into your internet course = using=20 Blackboard. Become = familiar with=20 the different modules. Click on the Syllabus module, and the Assignments = module.=20 Print them out so that you will have them while you are working off line = on the=20 assignments. Become familiar with "How to submit your = work".=20

After logging in for the first time, use the Bookmark or Favorites = function of your browser to save the page for easy access.

Most importantly, send an e-mail to your instructor with your name = and=20 course name and number to inform him/her that you were successful in = setting up=20 your Blackboard page.
