COURSE=20 DESCRIPTION:=20 This course provides an overview of computer hardware, software = and=20 operating system concepts used on microcomputers. Fundamentals and = advanced skills necessary to use the operating system, Windows XP, = are=20 studied in-depth providing the student with a solid foundation. = Students=20 will be exposed to real-world examples and procedures that will = prepare=20 them to be skilled users of Windows XP After successful completion = of the=20 course students should have a firm knowledge and understanding of = the=20 Windows operating system.

DISTANCE=20 LEARNING REQUIREMENTS:=20 It is the student=92s responsibility to provide (have access to) a = reliable=20 internet connection (some=20 form of high-speed recommended),=20 a web‑browser such as Internet Explorer 7 (recommended), a = zipping=20 (compression) program such as WinZip, and be competent in using a = computer=20 to navigate the Internet.  = You=20 will need Windows XP and Microsoft Office WORD installed on the = computer=20 you plan to use to complete this course.

 

IMPORTANT:=20 Concerning Hardware (computer) & Software (programs needed for = coursework) =96 it is the STUDENT=92S RESPONSIBILITY to make sure that = you have a=20 working computer & software for the entire length of the = course. You=20 should have a contingency plan in case you have a = hardware/software=20 failure. This is not a viable excuse for asking for = an=20 extension of work due.

 

Distance=20 learning courses are designed for the mature, self-motivated = person. This=20 is not a self‑paced class. There are deadlines and = consequences for all=20 assignments and examinations. At the beginning of the semester, = you will=20 be given an =93At‑a‑Glance=94 16‑week = calendar. You should print it and=20 place it where you will look at it every day. You should check the = e‑Courses site several times each week, daily is = recommended. There=20 is an =93Announcement=94 feature in e‑Courses. I use = it to post=20 important information. Upon=20 initial login, the student will have to provide a user ID and = password.=20 All students will follow these rules for the first=20 log‑in:

The = 1st=20 item on the link bar is Course Content. The icons at the bottom of = the=20 screen will take you to the same places as what you see under = Course=20 Content.

 

ASSIGNMENTS/ASSESSMENTS: Assignments=20 (weekly = homework) and=20 Assessments (these = are Quizzes=20 & Major Tests) can be found on the link bar, at the left of = the=20 screen, when you log into e-courses. The Instructor=92s Custom = Created=20 =93At‑a‑Glance=94 = 16‑week calendar=20 (available for download) should be your best tool to keep you on = schedule.=20 Due dates are posted with each assignment/assessment. Once an=20 assignment/assessment has expired, it becomes unavailable for = electronic=20 submission. It is impossible to slip it under my door, since I = don=92t have=20 a =93cyber=94 door. Please watch those due = dates.

 

There=20 are 12 chapters in the textbook. You will have an assignment and = an=20 on-line quiz from each chapter. For each chapter assignment there = will be=20 a file to download from e-Courses. It will be a MS Word = document=20 containing chapter instructions and a place to record answers. You = will=20 save the completed document and then thru e-Courses submit = it back=20 to me by scheduled due date. For each chapter you must also = complete an=20 on-line quiz. This quiz can only be taken ONCE. This quiz will = help=20 prepare you for the unit testing. You are able to access these = quizzes up=20 to 1 hour prior to the Major Test. These are a VERY good study = tool. Major=20 Testing will consist of 3 multiple choice tests (Test 1: Chapters = 1-4,=20 Test 2: Chapters 5-8, and Test 3: Chapters 9-12). These exams must = be=20 taken at an approved testing center. They are to be TIMED and=20 PROCTORED.  = Passwords will be=20 issued to your hosting test centers at the appropriate time frame. = On test=20 day be sure to bring your driver=92s license and valid student ID. = There=20 will be due dates, strictly enforced.

 

SUPPLIES:  Storage Media =96 = The book=20 makes use of your Hard Drive for a set of Master Files and = utilizes floppy=20 disks for student work. If your computer does not have a floppy = drive you=20 may use a flash drive, but not all instructions can be followed in = the=20 book. I will have to deal with each student individually on this = issue.=20  If using floppy = diskettes you=20 will need 2 - DS/HD 3 =BD=93 diskettes. = If using=20 flash drive you will need 2 also. These will need to be dedicated = to this=20 course only. You cannot use them for other courses while taking = this=20 class. If you have to purchase them, buy the smallest and = cheapest. What=20 you store on the flash is very small.  Required Software = =96 1)=20 Window XP Professional or Home Edition; 2) Folder/file Zipping = software=20 such as WinZip (can be downloaded from Internet); and 3) Microsoft = Office=20 Word, not=20 =93Works=94.
