Course Description:<= span style=3D'mso-spacerun:yes'> (As listed in the TVCC catalog) A stud= y of representative major words of American literature, with emphasis on careful reading, critical writing, and research.
Prerequisites: English 1302
Textbooks: The American Tradition in Literature, 12th edition, Volumes I and II.

Course Goals:
1. Students will conduct “close readings” = of literary texts, with particular attention to language and form.
2. Students will understand literary terminology and h= ow apply it to the analysis of a broad range of texts.
3. Students will recognize literary styles and genres,= and their relationship to the social, cultural, and historical contexts in which literary works are written.
4. Students will engage different “voices”= of American literature through self-reflexive reading
5. Students will observe how literature can create, ex= press, consolidate and / or critique cultural identity.
6. Stude= nts will place selected literature in the context of its own time by examining the historical, political, and artistic backgrounds of the literature.
7. Stude= nts will explore connections between American literature and their own lives.
8. Using research as well as their own critical thinking skills, students will analy= ze emotional, psychological, moral, and political issues in selected American literature.

Assignment Format:
All essays are double-spaced, in Times New Roman, and = in font size 12. All essays must follow MLA guidelines for all headings = and page numberings. When you submit assignments, please use Blackboard a= nd email as a Word Document or as a Rich Text Format attachment. ALL assignmen= ts must follow the standards for grammar, spelling, and mechanics.
The assignments will require the student to read and a= nalyze tests, participate in online discussion, share research, and cooperate in g= roup actives to address literary questions about various texts.
Plagiarism:
By registering and taking this course, the officially enrolled student declares that he/she will be the author of ALL work submit= ted for the course. Allowing another individual to complete writing assignments constitutes fraud and academic dishonesty. Should such behavior come to the attention of the instructor, the student will be dropped from t= he course and receive a grade of “F.”
Limitations to the Number of Withdrawals from Co= urses
A new THECB Rule has been established to address= a new law enacted by the legislature regarding the number of withdrawals (“W’s”) that a student may have during their academic car= eer (TEHCB Rules: Chapter 4, Subchapter A,4.10). The law states that any student whose first semester in college is Fall = 2007 or later may not have more than six unexcused withdrawals (W’s) during their academic career. This applies to a student’s academic rec= ord from all higher education institutions attended. If a student has six unexcused withdrawals, they will no longer be allowed to withdraw from a co= urse without receiving a grade in the course (which will be an “F”). To determine if a withdrawal is excused, a student = must initiate a withdrawal request through the guidance services office or, in special circumstances, through the faculty member. It is the student’s responsibility to officially withdraw from a course and to verify that the withdrawal has been posted to their transcript.
Late Assignment Policy:
It is inevitable that life will interfere and th= at unforeseen circumstances will arise. An assignment may be submitted within two days of the due date with a one-letter grade deduction. No assignment may be submitted after two days from the original due date. For example, this means that an assignment due on July 20th and submitted on July 21st will receive a one letter grade deduction. An assignment due on July 20th and submitted on= the 22nd will receive a zero.
Class Policies:
Students will be respectful of each other. Students will complete assignments= and do their own work. Students w= ill no copy from any source without proper documentation or present any work as his/her own which is not, indeed, his or her own. At the instructor’s discreti= on, students will be assigned a grade of “F” in the course for such plagiarism.
As dictated by the TVCC catalog, a researched essay is required for credit in this class.
Students are expected to treat the instructor and the = other students in the class with the same respect required in the classroom.
