The=20 textbook adopted for this course will no longer be available and a new = textbook=20 is being selected. At the time we needed to submit the syllabus for your = review,=20 a final decision had not been made. As soon as one is selected, this = syllabus=20 will be edited and the information will be listed here. You should = access this=20 syllabus and check for purchasing information after May 14, 2009. = Textbooks may=20 be purchased at the TVCC Bookstore. Course=20 Objectives

This=20 course includes an introduction to economics, macroeconomic = fundamentals,=20 macroeconomic stability and instability as well as a study of fiscal = policy,=20 money, the economy, and monetary policy, and expectations theory and = economic=20 growth.

Course=20 Learning Outcomes

The=20 student will acquire an understanding of the following course learning=20 outcomes:

An=20 understanding of economic definitions, economic categories, and key=20 concepts

An=20 understanding of production possibilities frontier, trade, exchange,=20 specialization, economic systems, and property = rights

An=20 understanding of demand, supply, the market, and price=20 controls

An=20 understanding of supply and demand in practice

An=20 understanding of macroeconomic measures such as prices and=20 unemployment

An=20 understanding of Gross Domestic Product including the expenditure = approach,=20 income approach, other national income measurements, and real=20 GDP

An=20 understanding of aggregate demand and aggregate = supply

An=20 understanding of the Classical View, three states of the economy, and=20 self-regulating economy

An=20 understanding of Keynesian Model

An=20 understanding of the federal budget and fiscal policy including = demand-side and=20 supply-side economic models

An=20 understanding of the Federal Reserve System including the tools for = controlling=20 the economy

Course=20 Access on Blackboard Learning System =96 Log in=20 Instructions

Please=20 note that even if you are familiar with Internet course work, the log in = information has changed. The=20 log in and password will now be the same with one minor difference. The = log in=20 will be: your last name then your first initial and then the last four = numbers=20 of your social security number; all lower case with no spaces. For = example: doej1234. You will follow the same procedure to create = your=20 password except that you need to use a capital letter to begin your last = name=20 (Doej1234). VCT Students: = You will=20 follow the same procedure unless your college issues student ID#s. In = that case=20 you will use the last four digits of your student ID# rather than the = digits=20 from your SS#.

After=20 you log in for the first time, you will need to create an 8-digit = password that=20 conforms to the strong password security requirements. If your password = does not=20 meet these requirements, you will receive an error message. Error = messages=20 include:

Please=20 enter a password with at least 8 characters.

Your=20 password does not meet the strong password requirement. It must include = 3 of the=20 following types of characters: Uppercase letters, lowercase = letters,=20 numbers, and/ or symbols. For example: =20 Pa55w*rd.

You=20 will have to continue to try until you submit an acceptable=20 password.

Orientation

Your=20 orientation to this course will take place on line and will be a simple=20 questionnaire to reinforce what you have read in this syllabus and the = other=20 homepage documents. You will be asked to answer the questions, submit an = attachment, send an email, etc. This is done to acquaint the students = with the=20 format of the course. This questionnaire is not a graded = assignment. Don=92t be concerned = if you do=20 not receive the questionnaire for a few days. I need to wait until = registration=20 ends and all of my students are on my = roster.

Submitting=20 Work and/or Contacting Your Instructor

All=20 work and all communication regarding this course must take place within = the=20 Blackboard system. All records including what each student submits = along=20 the time and date submitted, are all recorded electronically. Email=20 communication with attachments, course wide announcements, etc. will all = travel=20 through the Blackboard system. You should use my TVCC email only = if you are=20 experiencing problems with Blackboard.

Instructional=20 Methods

This=20 course is offered as an integrated program of independent study. The = textbook is=20 your primary source for successful completion of this course. The = chapters=20 include analysis questions, self-tests, chapter summaries, key terms and = concepts, questions and problems, graphs illustrations, exhibits, and = Internet=20 activities. These activities are not required for purposes of recorded = grades;=20 they are simply designed to help you help yourself. The tests will come = from the=20 textbook, therefore your dedication and to reading and comprehending the = required chapters is the key to success.

Tests

This=20 course will include five tests. The tests will be based on the material = in the=20 textbook. Each test will consist of 50 multiple choice questions. = TVCC=20 students will take their tests at the testing center or LRC on the = Athens, Palestine, or Terrell Campus. Testing = hours at=20 the TVCC testing centers or LRCs are posted on the TVCC homepage. Make = certain=20 that you are reading or asking about =93testing hours=94, not hours of=20 operation. Late tests = will be=20 allowed for approximately two weeks passed the test date (with the = exception of=20 Test 5) with a 10 point penalty. After two weeks, the test grade = will be a=20 zero. Each test is worth 100 points and equivalent to approximately 16% = of the=20 grade in the class. You=20 will find more detailed testing information in the document =93Test and = Testing=20 Policy=94 on your homepage.

(Chapters=20 cannot be determined until the new textbook is=20 selected.)

Academic=20 Dishonesty

Any=20 student who engages in academic dishonesty (such as browsing/emailing or = having=20 a cell phone, calculator, notes, text, etc. while testing), will be = dropped from=20 the course.

Assignments=20

Discussion=20 Questions

Ten=20 discussion questions will be posted to the Blackboard Discussion Board = on=20 designated dates. Students will be required to post an answer to the DQ = and a=20 response to other student posts for each discussion question. The = Discussion=20 Questions are worth 10 points each for a total of 100 points. Discussion = Questions will not be accepted late. Be sure to read the DQ document on = your=20 homepage. This will help you understand what is expected from your DQs. = You can=20 also review the grading form that I will use when I am grading your = work. To do=20 this simply click on =93grading form=94 when you go to the = DQ.

Bonus=20 Point Assignments

Students=20 will have an opportunity to complete an extra assignment to earn bonus = points to=20 be added to their test scores. Bonus assignment work will not be = accepted after=20 the on time test due date. The bonus point assignment is also = being=20 redesigned and the specifics of the assignments are not available at = this time.=20 That information will also be added to this syllabus once the textbook = has been=20 adopted so check back after May 14, 2009. This much is certain: Bonus point = assignments will=20 not be accepted after the original due date for each test and=20 this will be the only = bonus=20 work available to any student throughout the semester. Please do not ask = or=20 expect to be given any additional opportunities for bonus=20 points.

Schedule=20 of Deadlines

Deadlines=20 will be established and recorded here as well as entered on the course=20 calendar.

Tests=20 and assignments should be taken and submitted before the due dates if = possible.=20 Tests may be taken at the TVCC testing center or TVCC = Learning Resources Center. TVCC testing center and = LRC hours=20 are posted on the TVCC homepage. Students have APPROXIMATELY two weeks = passed=20 the test due date (with the exception of Test 5) to take a late = test for a=20 10 point late deduction. After the approximate two weeks, students will = be given=20 a zero on the test. Please notice that there is little time for = submitting=20 Test 5 because the semester is ending.

Class=20 Grade

The=20 course grade will be determined according to the following = calculation: =20 The total of the scores on each of the five tests, plus the accumulative = scored=20 on the DQ assignment to be divided by six (number of=20 entries).

A=20 =3D 90-100, B =3D 80-89, C =3D 70-79, D =3D 60-69, F =3D Below = 60

Important=20 remarks for those of you who are reviewing this syllabus to make a = decision=20 about enrollment:

=B7 =20 As=20 stated in the section on testing, you should be prepared to travel to a = TVCC=20 testing center to take each of the required tests.

=B7 =20 If=20 you are a dual credit student, do not assume that you will be able to = test at=20 your high school. Usually that can be arranged but it is not a guarantee = unless=20 you know that your high school has contacted me and that the = arrangements have=20 been completed.

=B7 =20 If=20 you are a VCT student, testing arrangements will be made with your home = college=20 but you will have to be prepared to travel to your college to take = proctored=20 tests.

=B7 =20 Proper=20 computer access and technical support is the responsibility of the = student and=20 technical difficulties will not regarded as a reason to make exceptions = for=20 deadlines and penalties.
