&nbs= p; =20 This=20 course is an introduction to the selection, use and potential value of = the=20 microcomputer in the home, classroom and business environment. Emphasis is placed on gaining = practical=20 experience with the use of several popular, commercially available = software=20 systems. The topical = coverage=20 includes the rudiments of information systems, operation of the IBM = compatible=20 microcomputer, Microsoft disk-operating system, word processing, = electronic=20 spreadsheets, and database management systems.

PREREQUISITE: No course prerequisites, = however, this=20 course assumes computer and Internet literacy. This course requires = self-discipline and=20 self-motivation. =20

The instructor reserves the right to drop a = student from=20 this Internet class if the student fails to contact the instructor = through the=20 Internet course for two consecutive weeks in a row. This is solely up = to the=20 discretion of the instructor.

All students are expected to set aside time to = complete=20 all lab assignments and quizzes. = Dates to submit lab assignments and quizzes will be strictly=20 enforced. =20

It is the student=92s responsibility to = officially drop a=20 course or verify that the instructor has initiated the drop = procedure. See the counselor at the = college that=20 you enrolled at to officially drop from this = course.

NOTE:

A new THECB Rule = has been=20 established to address a new law enacted by the legislature regarding = the number=20 of withdrawals (=93Ws=94) that a student may have during their academic = career (=20 THECB Rules: Chapter 4, Subchapter A, 4.10). The law states that any = student=20 whose first semester in college is Fall 2007 or later may not have more = than six=20 unexcused withdrawals (=93W=94s ) during their academic career. This applies to a student=92s = academic=20 record from all higher education institutions attended. If a student has six unexcused = withdrawals, they will no longer be allowed to withdraw from a course = without=20 receiving a grade in the course (which will be an =93F=94). To determine if a withdrawal = is excused,=20 a student must initiate a withdrawal request through the guidance = services=20 office or, in special circumstances, through the faculty member. It is the student=92s = responsibility to=20 officially withdraw from a course and to verify that the withdrawal has = been=20 posted to their transcript.

BEHAVIOR:

Every=20 student is to use professional courtesy when corresponding with the = instructor=20 and the instructor will do so also. =

Inappropriate=20 behavior which continues after the instructor=92s reprimand will be = dealt with=20 by administration.

OTHER=20 INFORMATION

DISHONESTY:

In=20 this class, test and quiz are synonymous.

Scholastic=20 dishonesty as described on page 56 of the TVCC Catalog applies to, and = will not=20 be tolerated in this class. = Page 56=20 of the TVCC catalog relating to scholastic dishonesty is stated as=20 follows:

Scholastic dishonesty which = shall=20 constitute a violation of these rules and regulations and is punishable = by Board=20 policies. Scholastic dishonesty shall include, but not be limited to, = cheating=20 on a test, plagiarism, and collusion.

=93Cheating=20 on a test=94=20 shall include:

a. =20 Copying=20 from another student=92s test paper.

b. =20 Using=20 test materials not authorized by the person administrating the=20 test.

c. =20 Collaborating=20 with or seeking aid from another student during a test without = permission from=20 the test administrator.

d. =20 Knowingly=20 using, buying, selling, stealing, or soliciting, in whole or in part, = the=20 contents of an unadministered test.

e. =20 The=20 unauthorized transporting or removal, in whole or in part, of the = contents of=20 the unadministered test.

f. =20 Substituting=20 for another student, or permitting another student to substitute for = oneself, to=20 take a test.

g. =20 Bringing=20 another person to obtain an unadministered test or information about an=20 unadministered test.

=93Plagiarism=94 shall=20 be defined as the appropriating, buying, receiving as a gift, or = obtaining by=20 any means another=92s work and the unacknowledged submission or = incorporation of=20 it in one=92s own written work.

=93Collusion=94=20 shall be defined as the unauthorized collaboration with another person = in=20 preparing written work for fulfillment of course=20 requirements.

DISHONESTY=20 CONTINUED:

In this=20 class, a grade of zero will be given to any work if it is = determined that=20 a student is copying that work from another student or in any way = violating the=20 TVCC dishonesty policy as described on page 56 of the TVCC catalog. The student that copies will = receive a=20 zero, and the student that lets another student copy from his/her = work=20 will receive a zero. =93Work=94 consists of any class = assignment,=20 lab/homework (Lab/HW) assignment, any test, quiz, or final.

If I=20 suspect that a student is cheating, it will be up to the student to = produce=20 his/her disk (or other storage media) so that the storage media can be=20 examined. If I am still = convinced=20 that the student is not = doing=20 his/her own work or is =93sharing=94 work with another student or = students, the=20 grade of zero will stand. If the=20 students in question continue to exhibit the =93cheating=94 conduct, = he/she, or they=20 will be asked to drop the class, or I will drop he/she, or them out of = the=20 class. If the students in = question=20 cannot be dropped from the class because it is after the official drop = date as=20 specified in the catalog, then the student or students in question will = receive=20 a grade of =93F=94 in the class.
