description: This course is a
continuation of general chemistry I. It assumes that you have taken a chemi=
stry
class previously (either gen chem 1411 or chem 1405) and are reasonably proficient in math skil=
ls.

become familiar with important
terms and concepts such as aqueous(water-based) reactions, oxidation/reduct=
ion,
the gaseous state, gas laws, the kinetic-molecular theory, solutions and
properties of solutions, reaction kinetics, reversible reactions and equilibria, ionic equilibria ,
especially of weak acids and bases, the pH and pOH
scales, solubilities, solubility product consta=
nts
and other concepts as time allows.

Labkits: The lab component of the course is
accomplished at home and you will not have to visit our (or any) campus to
perform the lab experiments. You will have to purchase the labkit
(see below for information on how) to pass the course. There is a lab manual but it is
furnished in the lab kit (more on that below).

Tests will=
be
proctored at one of the TVCC testing facilities either here in Palestine,
Athens or Terrell. You will be
allowed to use a scientific calculator, a periodic table, scratch paper on =
the
tests. VCT students will need to locate a college testing center nearby and
provide me with contact information prior to the first test.

My current
practice is to give you 1 hr to take the test and if desired you can
immediately retake it again. You will have another hour for the retake. Only
the highest grade on the 2 attempts will count as your test grade. You cannot leave and return to ret=
ake
the test.

On the cha=
nce it
is necessary I do allow students to make up a test they have missed. But th=
is
must be done in a timely manner. It
is in your best interest and mine. If you know that you will miss a test
deadline I would appreciate you letting me know in advance. Only one makeup test may be given.=
If you miss a second test the fina=
l exam
will count as the second missed test.

The resear=
ch
project will involve your investigation of a topic of environmental importa=
nce
and a short paper you will write and submit. The subject must be relevant to the
course and the application of a chemical principle in modern society. Your choice of topic must be preap=
proved
but you have wide latitude to choose the subject. There will be more discus=
sion
of this assignment later in the course.

Late work =
may be
accepted but points will be deducted.
No work will be accepted after the answer key has been posted on
blackboard. Each assignment will have a 3 day window to submit it. The due
dates posted on Blackboard are the start of the window. If you submit an
assignment after the posted due date it will appear to be late but it
won’t actually be late until Blackboard will no longer accept it at t=
he
close of the window. No
assignments, labs, exercises or homework will be dropped.

There are 11 lab experiments in the=
labkit. I will count only 10 of them as grades. The other will be for extra credit=
but I
won’t decide which one is the extra credit experiment until later in =
the
term.

Student
engagement: Distance co=
urses
differ considerably from the traditional face to face (f2f) classes, especi=
ally
in the amount of communication between teacher/student and between one stud=
ent
and another. To improve
communications I would encourage each of you to contact me by email promptly
whenever you hit a roadblock.
Chances are it’s something small that’s giving you probl=
ems
and could easily be overcome. Also,
it’s highly likely that someone else in the class has the same proble=
m so
I strongly encourage you to use the discussion board(or outside email) to t=
alk
with each other.
