Course
description: This course is
designed for the non-science majors, including nursing and allied health
professions. It is an introdu=
ction
to chemistry and does not require any prerequisite knowledge of the subject=
.

We will cover b=
asic
topics and principles in order to give the student the widest possible

exposure. These subjects
include atomic structure, metric and other measurements, atoms and molecules
and ions, bonding, gases, liquids and solids, acids and bases, equilibrium,
oxidation and reduction, as well as other concepts as deemed appropriate.

= Learning outcomes: the student should = be able to use and understand elementary chemical principles, write formulas a= nd names, use chemical equations and reactions, perform simple stoichiometric calculations, calculate molecular weights and other similar operations. You= are also expected to prepare for lab assignments (experiments) in advance and be ready to perform satisfactorily before starting the experiment. This means reading over the experiment ahead of time, understanding what is required, recognizing the lab techniques needed and the safety risks involved. You are expected to work safely and productively and to follow all safety rules (see lab manual) at all times.<= o:p>

Material
covered: I expect to cover the
first half of this textbook, specifically chapters 1-8. The actual amount of
material covered will depend on the time allotted and the pace we can manage
during the semester.

Evaluation and
grading: There will be 2 test=
s and
a final exam, which will not be comprehensive. Tests 1 and 2 will cover 3 chapters, test 3 will be over chs 7 and 8. There will be a homework
assignment for each chapter.
Additional assignments, specifically exercises, will be required
throughout the course. The to=
tal
number of labs and homework grades will depend on the pace we set in the cl=
ass
and is subject to change. Letter grades are on the basis of
90-100% =3D A, 80-89% =3D B, etc.

Tests will be
administered online in a proctored environment at your local college testing
center. If that isn’t
possible for some reason other arrangements may be worked out on an individ=
ual
basis but all tests must be proctored.&nbs=
p;
Each test has a deadline date and must be completed (and submitted) =
by
the deadline. You may take a =
test
earlier but no one may take a test after the deadline date except under unu=
sual
circumstances. On the chance =
it is
necessary I do allow students to make up a test they have missed. The makeup test will not be the sa=
me
test as was missed and could possibly be comprehensive. Only one makeup test may be =
given.

All homework, l=
ab
reports and exercises, will be due as shown on the webct calendar. There is=
a 3
day window for webct to accept an assignment. If you miss the window=
webct
will not accept an assignment. The best way to submit something that late i=
s by
attaching it to an email sent to me at the email address shown above. Late work will be accepted but with
points taken off.

The lab compone=
nt of
this course will be done entirely offsite, presumably at your house. To accomplish this you will need to
purchase a lab kit(for this course it is the CK-=
101
kit), which costs approximately $175 when purchased directly from the suppl=
ier.
It may cost more than that if you buy it from the TVCC bookstore either on =
the
Athens or Palestine campuses.
