Failure = to acquire=20 the textbook and CengageNOW package in time = for the=20 submission of the first assignments due is not an excuse for the = assignments=20 being late. If course = enrollment=20 causes the bookstores to run out of textbook bundles, special = arrangements will=20 be made. These =93special arrangements=94 will be made for only those = students=20 attempting to acquire the textbook bundle through the TVCC = Bookstore. = Make=20 arrangements early for the Textbook. =20 No other items from the textbook publisher such as working = papers=20 or study guides are required. It = is highly=20 recommended that a removable storage device, such as a flash drive, be = utilized=20 for storing all items for the course. =20 It is also highly recommended that none of the items for this = course be=20 stored on your computer=92s hard drive. =20 One crash and you are sunk!

A=20 strong recommendation is that each student makes stand-by arrangements = for=20 acquiring access to another computer in the event the student=92s = computer should=20 crash. COURSE PREREQUISITES:

Accounting 2401, Financial Accounting, or its=20 equivalent

COURSE POLICIES:

Specific assignments and due dates will be provided=20 electronically. These = assignments=20 will be contained in a module posted on Blackboard entitled = =93Instructions,=20 Assignments, and Due Dates=94. The assignments will be completed = utilizing CengageNow=AE. =20 When completed, they will be submitted to CengageNOW=AE where they will be graded and = results reported=20 immediately to the student in the case of assignments and at the end of = the=20 allotted time period in the case of quizzes.

All assignments utilizing CengageNow=99 will=20 be accessible for approximately 15 days. =20 See the due dates listed in the Instructions,=20 Assignments, and Due Dates Module for the exact dates. The assignments will consist = of three=20 areas. The first area is=20 Homework. The homework = assignments=20 will be taken from the Practice Exercises, Exercises, and Problems = located at=20 the end of each of the chapters. = Some of the assigned homework items will be exactly like the = items at the=20 end of the chapter. = Others will be=20 algorithmic. This means that the assigned item will cover the same = concepts as=20 are covered with the end of the chapter items, only with different = numbers. The homework must be submitted = for=20 grading before any of the other assignments for the chapter may be=20 accessed. Also, after = chapter 15,=20 the Chapter Quiz, Part B for the previous chapter must have been = submitted for=20 grading before the homework for the next chapter may be accessed. Homework may be done and = submitted for=20 grading a total of three times. = If=20 Homework is submitted for grading and problems are missed, then when the = homework is opened for a second time, only the problems missed will need = to be=20 reworked. The program = saves the=20 correct work from previous attempts. =20 The Homework is not timed and the program allows a student to = quit and=20 save and return later without it being counted as an attempt. The = average of the=20 homework assignment grades will count for 25% of the semester = grade.

The second area is a Practice Quiz. This quiz is optional and can = be=20 accessed only if the homework for the chapter has been submitted for=20 grading. This practice = quiz will be=20 graded and the grade recorded on the CengageNOW grade=20 sheet, but will not be considered in the final semester grade=20 determination. It is = highly=20 recommended that this Practice Quiz be worked, but it is not = required. The questions for this = Practice Quiz=20 will be taken from the Practice Exercises, Exercises, and the Problems = at the=20 end of the chapter, as well as some True/False and Multiple Choice = Questions=20 from a separate test bank which accompanies your textbook. Some of these questions will = come=20 directly from the items at the end of the chapter, and some will be = algorithmic.=20 The Practice Quiz may be done and submitted for grading a total of two=20 times. If the Practice = Quiz is=20 submitted for grading and problems are missed, then when the Practice = Quiz is=20 opened for a second time, only the problems missed will need to be=20 reworked. The program = saves the=20 correct work from previous attempt. =20 The average of the Practice Quiz grades will not count for any = credit=20 toward the semester grade.

The third area is a Chapter Quiz over the materials of the=20 chapter. The chapter = quizzes will=20 be administered in two parts. = Part=20 A will be ten (10) True/False and Multiple Choice questions, with each = one worth=20 two (2) points for a total point value of 20. Part B will be 8 problems to = be worked,=20 with each problem worth ten (10) points for a total point value of = 80. The combined scores on Part A = and Part B=20 will be the chapter quiz grade. = The=20 homework for the given chapter must be submitted for grading before the = chapter=20 quiz, Part A can be accessed. = The=20 chapter quiz, Part A must be submitted for grading before the chapter = quiz, Part=20 B can be accessed. =20

Some of the quiz questions will come directly from the = items at the=20 end of the chapter, some will be algorithmic, and some will be similar = to those=20 at the end of the chapter. Each part of the Chapter Quiz will be timed = and only=20 one attempt will be allowed for each part. =20 The average of the chapter quiz grades will count for 75% of the = semester=20 grade.

More details on utilizing CengageNOW will=20 be available when class begins. =20

With this syllabus, each student is granted a waiver on one = late=20 assignment without penalties being imposed, provided the instructor is = notified=20 before the assignment is due and the reason for the assignment being = late is=20 explained, and an estimated time of submission of the assignment is = given. The waiver is granted = regardless of the=20 reason. When the student = is ready=20 to complete the assignment, the instructor must be notified so that the = CengageNow=99 program may be =94set=94 by the = instructor to allow=20 access by the student. = The=20 instructor will acknowledge the request and give the time when the = requested=20 assignment may be accessed. =20

The CengageNOW program has been = set to=20 allow approximately 15 days access to each chapter=92s materials. The access time to consecutive = chapters=20 overlap. Therefore, you = don=92t have=20 15 days to complete the first chapter, and then another 15 days for each = of the=20 subsequent chapters. The = materials=20 for the first chapter must be completed before the materials for the = subsequent=20 chapter may be accessed. = During the=20 last 9 days of the access period, a 10%-per-day penalty will be imposed = on the=20 grade. If a grade for a = Part B Quiz=20 has not been submitted by the end of the access period, access to = that=20 chapter and all subsequent chapters will be = denied.

With adequate notice, the student will be granted access to = assignments and quizzes prior to their scheduled posting times. The = instructor=20 will acknowledge the request and identify the time frame when the = requested=20 item(s) will be available.

The most important thing in any accounting class is = EFFECTIVE TIME=20 MANAGEMENT. A student = should not=20 expect to wait until a few hours, or even a day or two, before an = assignment is=20 due and then expect to be able to satisfactorily complete the = assignment. Many years of experience = indicates that=20 it can=92t be done! =20

INCOMPLETE=20 GRADES:

An =93I=94 (incomplete grade) is given at the discretion of = the professor=20 and may be given only when an emergency or illness prevents the student = from=20 completing course requirements. =20 It will not be given because a student fails to complete the=20 requirements for the course during the semester. Replacement of an =93I=94 by a = grade shall=20 be determined by the rules and policies of the host institution in the = case of=20 Virtual College of Texas students. =20 Some colleges do not allow an =93I=94, or its equivalent, to be = given, but=20 instead require that a letter grade be awarded.

For internet students enrolled through Trinity = Valley Community=20 College, the following policy is in = effect. Should an =93I=94 be granted, = the student=20 has until the end of the next long semester (spring, 2010 semester) to = complete=20 the conditions of the incomplete. =20 Upon completion of the requirements necessary to remove the = =93I=94, the=20 instructor will submit the proper documentation to the Registrar=92s = office with a=20 request that the grade of =93I=94 be changed to the grade made. An =93I=94 which is not = properly removed=20 within the next long semester following the session enrolled will become = an =93F=94=20 grade. To be sure that the grade has been changed, the student should = request a=20 transcript a few weeks after the student has completed the missing = items. Generally a report of the = grade change=20 is not made to the student, so obtaining an updated transcript is the = only sure=20 way to be certain that the grade change has been made. =

Student=92s=20 Responsibilities

This syllabus contains information, policies and procedures = for a=20 specific course. By = enrolling, the=20 student agrees to read, understand and abide by the policies, rules,=20 regulations, and ethical standards of Trinity Valley Community=20 College as contained in the current college = catalog=20 and schedule of classes.

Limitations to the Number of Withdrawals from=20 Courses

A new THECB Rule has been established to address a new law = enacted by=20 the legislature regarding the number of withdrawals (=93W=92s=94) that a = student may=20 have during their academic career (THECB Rules: Chapter 4, Subchapter A, = 4.10). The law states = that any=20 student whose first semester in college is fall 2007 or later may not = have more=20 than six unexcused = withdrawals (W=92s)=20 during their academic career. = This=20 applies to a student=92s academic record from all higher education = institutions=20 attended. If a student = has six unexcused withdrawals, = they will no=20 longer be allowed to withdraw from a course without receiving a grade in = the=20 course (which will be an =93F=94). To=20 determine if a withdrawal is excused, a student must initiate a = withdrawal=20 request through the guidance services office or, in special = circumstances,=20 through the faculty member. = It=20 is the student=92s responsibility to officially withdraw from a course = and to=20 verify that the withdrawal has been posted to their=20 transcript.

To drop this course, the drop process must be begun in the = proper=20 department of the host institution and follow the instructions supplied = by the=20 personnel there.

HOW TO = ACCESS YOUR=20 COURSE ON BLACKBOARD:

All course materials will be posted on Blackboard. Blackboard will be used for = most=20 communication in this class.

FOR TVCC STUDENTS ONLY:

The login procedure into Blackboard was changed during the = summer for=20 Trinity=20 Valley Community College internet = students. (The login procedure for VCT = students=20 has not changed and your specific instructions will follow.) The new login procedure came = about as a=20 result of TVCC providing each student of TVCC with an email address on = the=20 college=92s email system.

The first thing that must be done by TVCC students is to = activate=20 your new TVCC email account. = To=20 activate your email account, go to http://tvcc.edu/ and watch the screen = until you see=20 Cardinal Email. Click the = Learn=20 More button. THE = ACTIVATION OF THE=20 TVCC EMAIL ACCOUNT MAY NOT BE DONE UNTIL THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS (August=20 31). In activating your = email=20 account, you will be instructed on creating your Login I.D. (User Name) = and=20 your Login Password. Create these carefully and = remember them=20 as they are what you will use to log into Blackboard.

After you get your TVCC email account activated, you may = register on=20 Blackboard.

Blackboard may be accessed in one of two = ways.

The first way is to go to: =20 https://courses.tvcc.edu. =20 This takes you to the login page for Blackboard.

The second way is to go to http://tvcc.edu. =20 This takes you to the home page for Trinity Valley Community=20 College. =20 Look at the top of the home page and you will see various = tabs. Click on = ECourses. =20 This takes you to the login page for=20 Blackboard.

However you choose to access the login page for Blackboard, = when you=20 get there for the first time, there are certain housekeeping duties that = must be performed BEFORE YOU LOG=20 IN. =20

On the right side of the login page, you will see three = topic=20 headings: Browser=20 Check, Pop-up Blockers, and JAVA Security Certificate. You = must=20 perform the Browser Check before you log on. You should probably also = perform the=20 Pop-up check before you log on. = The=20 JAVA Security Certificate may be performed after you log on. It is highly recommended that = all three=20 of these be done before ever logging into Blackboard because these = procedures=20 are making sure your computer will be able to access Blackboard without=20 problems.

After completing these checks, you are ready to login to=20 Blackboard. You will be = asked to=20 provide two things: = User=20 Name and Password.

Your User Name and your Password for Blackboard are the = same as your=20 User Name and Password for your TVCC email account. (That is why you had to = activate your=20 TVCC email before attempting to log into Blackboard.) You User Name and = Password=20 will remain the same for the duration of the course. (This note: During the initial changeover = to the new=20 login, some problems were encountered. =20 Some of these problems may also be encountered during the fall = activation=20 process. Don=92t = despair. Just keep trying to get = registered into=20 Blackboard.)

FOR VIRTUAL COLLEGE OF TEXAS STUDENTS ONLY:

The login procedure for Blackboard has not changed for = Virtual=20 College of Texas students. = If you=20 are a VCT student and have used Blackboard before with a Trinity Valley=20 Community College VCT class, you should be able to log back into = Blackboard=20 using the same User Name and Password as you used in your last = class. If you are unable to get = logged in using=20 your old User Name and Password, then you will need to follow the = instructions=20 which follow and create new login data.

Blackboard may be accessed in one of two = ways.

The first way is to go to: =20 https://courses.tvcc.edu. =20 This takes you to the login page for Blackboard.

After completing these checks, you are ready to login to=20 Blackboard. You will be = asked to=20 provide two things: = User=20 Name and Password.

Your User Name is as follows: It is your last name followed = by the=20 first letter of your first name as you registered, and this followed by = the last=20 four digits of your social security number OR the last four = digits of=20 your host college=92s Student Identification Number if your host college = issued=20 you one. All of this is = small case=20 letters and there are no spaces or other marks within the User=20 Name.

Your initial Password is exactly like your User Name = with this=20 one exception. The first = letter of=20 your last name is capitalized.

For example, my name is Jerry Rogers. Suppose the last four = digits of=20 my social security number or of my student I.D. number are 1234. Then, my User Name will be = rogersj1234 and my initial Password will be = Rogersj1234. =20 The only difference is the capital R in=20 the Password.

This Password will need to be changed when you first log = into=20 Blackboard. A set of = instructions=20 for creating a new Password will be given you. COURSE OUTLINE

Historically, the first courses in accounting have been = taught as if=20 all students taking the course were taking it to become accountants, = thus the=20 emphasis was on producing accounting data. =20 More recently, the emphasis has shifted from teaching students to = be=20 producers of accounting data to being users of accounting data. To be an effective user, one = must know=20 the sources of the data. It is in line with this more recent emphasis = that this=20 course is taught. The = course will=20 cover the basics of managerial accounting report preparation. The course will also place = emphasis on=20 using this data in decision making.

The most important element in the successful completion of = any=20 accounting course is EFFECTIVE TIME = MANAGEMENT.=20 Learning accounting is much like building a house: a good foundation = must first=20 be laid, and then the rest of the house is built on this = foundation. In building the house, certain = things=20 must be done before other things. =20 After the good foundation is laid, the studs must be raised = before the=20 ceiling joists can be put in place. =20 The ceiling joists must be in place before the rafters can be put = in=20 place. The rafters must = be in place=20 before the roof decking can be put in place. And so it goes. The order of completion is = important;=20 one thing builds on another. = And so=20 it is with accounting. A = good=20 foundation in the basic concepts of accounting is important. After that good foundation, = the course=20 builds on it. Concepts = are=20 presented in a predetermined order. =20 It is learning the concepts at each step, and then building on = them at=20 the next step, that gets the job done in accounting. The work in accounting can not = be=20 postponed until shortly before an assignment is due and then expect to = be=20 completed satisfactorily. =20

The following paragraphs should be referred to regularly as = the=20 student studies each of the chapters of the course. This paragraph contains an = approach that=20 the instructor has found to be effective for other accounting students = in the 20=20 plus years that the instructor has taught accounting at the college=20 level.

In = doing=20 accounting, one should first read the chapter objectives. These objectives, located at = the=20 beginning of each chapter, identify to the student what the student = should learn=20 from the chapter. The objectives will be developed in the chapter. At the end of each chapter, = these=20 objectives are summarized. = You=20 might look at these summaries first to get an idea of what the = objectives are=20 about, and what you are expected to learn from the=20 chapter.

After = looking at=20 the objectives, and the summaries of the objectives, the student should = next=20 look to the Study Guide posted on Blackboard by the instructor. Within the Study Guide, the = instructor=20 has summarized the materials from each of the chapters, explaining some = of the=20 materials that often cause trouble for students, and pointing out = important=20 materials.

With = the objectives=20 in mind and knowing what the instructor has to say about the chapter, = the=20 student should then read the chapter to get an idea as to the total = content and=20 see how all the various materials presented tie together. This first = reading=20 should be to get an overview of the materials from the chapter. Attention should not be paid = to minute=20 details. At this point, = the student=20 just wants to get an over-view of the materials of the=20 chapter.

After = having read=20 the chapter the first time, the student should go back and read the = chapter a=20 second time. This time, = read more=20 slowly, taking time to reflect on the materials presented. When example problems are = presented, the=20 student should work these problems to see how they apply to what has = been read.=20 As the chapter is being read this second time, the chapter objectives = should be=20 kept in mind. Also while = reading=20 the chapter this second time, the student should be completing the = Practice=20 Achievement Test provided by the instructor. (Note: The instructor will also = provide the=20 answer key to the Practice Achievement Test so that immediate feedback = may be=20 had.) After reading the = chapter two=20 times and preparing the Practice Achievement Test, the student should = next go to=20 the publisher=92s web site and prepare the Tutorial Quiz for the given=20 chapter.
