Course Description= : English 1301, the first half of freshman English, aims to help the student acquire and/or improve skills in producing effective writing which observes the conventions of Edited American English ~ ie, writing which is acceptable in= the academic and professional worlds. The student will be guided through the composition process, encourag= ed to find and improve his/her own writing style, and guided in the analysis a= nd evaluation of his own and others’ writing.

Course Objectives<= /b>: Upon the completion of this course, students will be able to:

·        Use reasoning ski= lls

·        Deal critically w= ith ideas

·        Select and restri= ct a topic for an essay

·        Develop a thesis statement or make the purpose of the essay clear

·        Develop and use an outline and establish a pattern of organization

·        Develop ideas thoroughly by making extensive use of supportive details such as facts, reasons, and examples

·        Use appropriate t= one and language suited to the audience given

·        Use the generally accepted standards of Edited American English for mechanics, grammar, punctuation and spelling.

·        Identify and util= ize research materials available in the campus library as well as online method= s

·        Use the writing p= rocess to produce an essay via an user friendly word processing program=

~ In addition to the texts listed above, students MUST bring the following to EA= CH class:

     *Writing utensils (pen/pencil) including a highlighter

     *Spiral notebook = for note taking and response journal

     *Some sort of fol= der to house your handouts for the semester

     *A storage device= to save your essays composed using word

     processing

Course Requirements:

~A minimum of 6 essays of 500-700 words, all of which will be derived using the writing process as set forth during the first week of class.

~All final copies must be typed (unless prior approval is given by the instructo= r)

~Gr= oup work

~Wr= itten assignments from text and other modes of learning

~ L= ibrary research

~Cl= ose reading of assigned materials

~Re= gular and prompt attendance

~As= signments that are turned in on time ~ late assignments will be docked 10 points per class period that they are late up to 4 class periods. At that point, the grade will go t= o a zero.

Tests:=

Wee= kly quizzes will be quick and relatively painless, assuming that the student has completed the required readings and homework for the week. These MAY NOT be made up in the ev= ent of an absence.

Maj= or tests will reflect materials covered in class as well as independent reading assignments.

Grading:

*Jo= urnal, attendance, participation, class work & homework~ 25%=

*Wr= itten Essays (5-6) ~ 50%

(Ea= ch essay will be evaluated based on a set rubric which will be given to studen= ts and thoroughly explained during the first week of class.)=

*Te= sts/Quizzes ~ 25%

The= re will be a point system handout the first week of class that will make the grading system more “visual” and easier to understand.

(Pl= ease note that all late work will be penalized by point deductions which accrue = per each class meeting.)

Attendance/= Absences:

Stu= dents are expected to attend all classes.   If you are absent or plan to = be absent, please have the courtesy to contact me by phone or e-mail. Also, you will be responsible for = acquiring make-up work and for completing it by the next class meeting. I will NOT give you your assignment= s; it is your responsibility to ask me for them.= I understand that ther= e are uncontrollable forces in life that we are not in control of but it is your responsibility to carve out the time each week that you have committed to devoting to this class. When a student accumulates 3 absences, there will be a teacher-student conference = to evaluate the student’s progress.

Dropping a = Course:

The student should be aware of the date for dropping the course with a “W”. For the Fall= 2009 semester, that is November 20^th . It is the responsibility of the st= udent to take care of the paper work required to drop a course. Ask the Guidance/Counseling Office= for details. The instructor will = not drop a student for non-attendance. This is the responsibility of the student. For more information, see the current student catalog for the attend= ance and drop policies.

Classroom Etiquette:

*St= udents should be prompt, prepared, and should remain for the entire class time. 3 tardies =3D 1 absence. A student is tardy when they are m= ore than 5 minutes late to class.

*Ce= ll Phones MUST be turned off!! No exceptions.= No text messaging. No leaving the room to answer your phone or check your messages. Failure to follow this rule will r= esult in a zero (0) being given for class participation for that class period.

IF = you are texting or have your phone on/out during a test, it will be an automatic zero on that test. NO Excepti= ons.

*No= food or drink is allowed in the classroom.

*Th= is is a college classroom – please treat it as such and we will have a fantastic semester!

Academic Dishonesty

Aca= demic dishonesty is not tolerated in my classroom or at TVCC. Academic dishonesty is the knowing= use or borrowing of homework, test answers, essays or portions of essays as pas= sing them off as your own. This is punishable be receiving a zero for the assignment or test at hand.

When writing an essay, you must acknowledge the use of a source when you (1) quo= te someone’s exact words, (2) summarize or borrow someone’s opinio= ns or ideas, or (3) use information and facts that are not considered to be co= mmon knowledge. The purpose of this documentation is to acknowledge your sources, to demonstrate that you are familiar with what others have thought about a topic, and to provide your reader with access to the same sources.&nb= sp; If you do not adequately document, your paper will be vulnerable to a charge of plagiarism ~ the presentation of someone else’s work as your own. Conscious plagiarism is = easy to avoid; honesty takes care of that for most. (Meyer 2154) However, blatant plagiarism will carry a penalty of a zero on the assignment, essay, or test. <= /p>
