ITSC 1191, 1291, 1391, 1491.  Special Topics in Computer and Information Sciences.

   The courses are designed to identify and provide knowledge and skills in the latest technological developments in computer software and programming applications.  Special emphasis is placed on meeting the needs of business, industry, government, and other institutions.


COSC 1401. (COSC 1476) Microcomputer Applications. (4-3-3)

   This course is an introduction to the selection, use, and potential value of the microcomputer in the home, classroom, and business environment. Emphasis is placed on gaining practical experience with the use of several popular, commercially available software systems. The topical coverage includes the rudiments of information systems, operation of the IBM compatible microcomputer, The Microsoft Windows operating  system, word processing, electronic spreadsheets, database management systems, and presentation software.

ITSC 1401. Introduction to Computer Science. (4-3-3)

   An introduction to Computer Systems and their use in business. The course covers the history and development of computers, concepts and terminology, operations and career opportunities in computer related fields. The course includes a series of lab projects using IBM compatible computers. This course is designed primarily for students majoring in computer science. Lab Fee: $15.00


COSC 1309. Computer Logic and Problem Solving. (3-3-0)

   An introduction to the theory and practice of program design, development, and structure with particular emphasis on typical business programming and logical processes.  A variety of design and documentation methodologies will be considered including flowcharts, structure diagrams, and other processing specification tools.  The course will center primarily on problem-solving using these tools and techniques.


COSC 1415.  Fundamentals of Programming. (4-3-3)

   An introduction to computer programming.  Emphasis on the fundamentals of structured design, development, testing, implementation, and documentation methodologies.  Includes coverage of language syntax, problem solving, data and file structures, input/output devices, and disks/files.  Lab Fee: $15.00


COSC 1418.  PASCAL Programming. (4-3-3)

Prerequisite: COSC 1309 or COSC 1415 or approval of instructor.

   A study of the fundamentals of programming in PASCAL. Structured programming is emphasized. Various aspects of programming in a block structured language are discussed. Lab Fee: $15.00


ITSW 1411. AS-400 Operating System and Operations.  (4-3-3)

   A study of computer hardware and their operational relationships. This course will emphasize operation of the IBM AS/400. Lab Fee: $15.00


ITSE 1414. Introduction to R.P.G. Programming. (4-3-3)

Prerequisite: COSC 1309 or COSC 1415 or approval of instructor.

   An introduction to RPG/400 programming as implemented on the IBM AS/400. The course includes a careful study of the language syntax and programming exercises reflecting business applications. Lab Fee: $15.00


BCIS 2390  Systems Analysis and Design. (4-3-3)

Prerequisite: ITSC 1401.

   This course focuses on the analysis of existing business systems and designing computerized business systems. The flow of data within and through the system is emphasized. The student will complete case studies of selected business problems. Lab Fee: $15.00


ITSW 1404. (COSC 2475) Electronic Spreadsheets. (4-3-3)

Prerequisite: COSC 1401.

   Understanding and using the basic and advanced concepts of electronic spreadsheets for business applications. Includes the designing of templates, formatting the worksheet, headings, formula building, financial sheets, "what if" forecasting, graphics, printing, and disk operations. Lab Fee: $15.00


ITSW 1407.  Introduction to Database Management. (4-3-3)

Prerequisite: COSC 1401.

   Introduces database theory and practical application. Includes techniques for planning, defining, and designing a database along with procedures pertaining to queries, reports, control, and security of the database. Hands on experience will be provided using appropriate application software. Lab Fee: $15.00


ITSE 2409.  Database Programming. (4-3-3)

Prerequisite: COSC 1415 and ITSW 1407 or approval of instructor.

   This course is an introduction to problem solving and structured programming techniques using database software as a development environment. Course content will include, but not be limited to planning, coding, testing, debugging, and implementing programs to construct or enhance user menus, screens, and windows. Lab Fee: $15.00


COSC 1420  Introduction to C Programming. (4-3-3)

Prerequisite: COSC 1309 or COSC 1415 and a minimum of one high-level programming language or approval of instructor.

   An introduction to the fundamentals of the C and C++ programming language with emphasis placed upon business and scientific problems and applications.

Lab Fee: $15.00.


COSC 2420  Advanced C++ Programming. (4-3-3)

Prerequisite: COSC 1420 or approval of instructor.

   An advanced course in C programming using the object oriented approach to programming. Includes an emphasis on code reusability through the use of library functions for I/O, flow control and string manipulation. Topics include encapsulation, inheritance and polymorphism. Lab Fee: $15.00


BCIS 1432  Introduction to COBOL Programming. (4-3-3)

Prerequisite: COSC 1309 or COSC 1415 or approval of instructor.

   This course is an introduction to structured design and programming, using the COBOL language.  The powerful file handling and report editing capabilities of COBOL are illustrated through typical business applications. Lab Fee: $15.00


ITSE 2451.  Advanced COBOL Programming. (4-3-3)

Prerequisite: BCIS 1432 or approval of instructor.

   A continuation of BCIS 1432, with an emphasis on more advanced COBOL concepts such as multiple level control breaks, table searching, sorting subroutines, character manipulation, and screen management. The creation and use of random access (index) files is covered. Lab Fee: $15.00


ITSC 1421.  Operating Systems. (4-3-3)

Prerequisite: COSC 1401 or ITSC 1401 or approval of instructor.

   This course will concentrate on the use of windows-based microcomputer operating systems. Emphasis is on creating, editing, and managing of data files, path directory structure, operating system commands, and hard disk management. Lab Fee: $15.00


ITSC 1417. Operating Systems - DOS. (4-3-3)

Prerequisite: COSC 1401 or ITSC 1401 or approval of instructor.

   This course is an introduction to the DOS Operating Systems. Topics include installation and configuration, file management, memory, and storage management, peripheral device control, and use of utilities. Lab Fee: $15.00


ITSC 1425. PC Maintenance and Repair. (4-3-3)

   A study of current personal computer hardware including personal computer assembly, upgrading and repair, setup and configuration, and troubleshooting. Lab Fee: $15.00


BCIS 1431.  Visual Basic Programming. (4-3-3)

Prerequisite: COSC 1415

   A course designed to provide the student with the fundamentals of programming using the object oriented approach to programming. Computer programming techniques include designing with a user interface, creating menus, and writing basic code. The student will learn the basics of writing code for event procedures, how to use variables, how to manipulate strings, use condition statements and loops, and how to write  subprograms (general procedures). Lab Fee: $15.00


BCIS 2416. Advanced Visual Basic Programming. (4-3-3)

Prerequisite: BCIS 1431.

   Further applications of programming techniques using Visual Basic. Topics include file access methods, data structures and modular programming, program testing and documentation. Lab Fee: $15.00


ITCC 1402. LAN Design and Protocols - Cisco 1. (4-3-3)

Prerequisite: COSC 1401 or approval of instructor.

   This course is an introduction to the fundamentals, basic concepts, and terminology of networks. Topics include the access and use of the internet and networking hardware and software, including current developments in networking. Lab Fee: $15.00


ITCC 1406. Basic Router Configuration - Cisco 2. (4-3-3)

Prerequisite: ITCC 1402.

   This course includes instruction in networking technologies and their implementations. Topics include the OSI reference model, network protocols, transmission media, and networking hardware and software. Lab Fee: $15.00


ITCC 1442. Local Area Management - Cisco 3. (4-3-3)

Prerequisite: ITCC 1406.

   This course involves preparation to work with and maintain network hardware devices. Topics include network cables, servers, and workstations, network connectivity devices such as routers, hubs, bridges, gateways, repeaters, and UPS's; along with other networking hardware devices. Lab Fee: $15.00


ITCC 1446. Wide Area Management - Cisco 4. (4-3-3)

Prerequisite: ITCC 1442.

   This course provides instruction in the techniques used to troubleshoot and support networks with emphasis on solving real world problems in a hands-on environment. Topics include troubleshooting and research techniques, available resources, and network management. Lab Fee: $15.00


ITNW 1480. Cooperative Education/Practicum – Business Systems Networking. (4-1-20)

   Career related activities in the student’s area of specialization are offered through a cooperative agreement between the college, the employer, and student. Under supervision of the college and the employer, the student combines classroom learning with work experience. Lab Fee: $15.00

   Career related activities in the student's area of specialization are offered through a cooperative agreement between the college, the employer, and student. Under supervision of the college and the employer, the student combines classroom learning with work experience. Lab Fee: $15.00


ITSW 1481. Cooperative Education/Practicum – Data Processing Technology (4-1-20)

   Career related activities in the student’s area of specialization are offered through a cooperative agreement between the college, the employer, and student. Under supervision of the college and the employer, the student combines classroom learning with work experience. Lab Fee: $15.00


ITSC 1413. Internet/Web Page Development. (4-3-3)

Prerequisite: COSC 1401 or approval of instructor.

   Instruction in the use of the Internet. Internet services, and the fundamentals of HTML, web page design and web site development. Lab Fee: $15.00


ITSE 2413. Advanced Web Page Authoring.  (4-3-3)

Prerequisite: ITSC 1413 or approval of instructor.

   Instruction in designing and developing web pages that incorporate text, graphics, and other supporting elements using current technologies, and authoring tools.

Lab Fee: $15.00


ITSE 2417. JAVA Programming. (4-3-3)

Prerequisite: COSC 1309 or COSC 1415 or approval of instructor.

   Introduction to object oriented programming using JAVA. Emphasis on the fundamental syntax and semantics of JAVA for applications and web applets. Lab Fee: $15.00


IMED 2409. Electronic Commerce (Internet). (4-3-3)

Prerequisite: ITSC 1401 and ITSC 1413 or approval of instructor.

   An overview of the Internet as a marketing and sales tool with emphasis on developing a prototype for electronic commerce. Topics include database technology, creating web sites in order to collect information, performing on-line transactions, and generating dynamic content. Lab Fee: $15.00
