Computer & Business Systems

Computer Literacy and Keyboarding classes provide an introduction to basic computer use with Windows XP. Instruction includes creating, saving and managing files, hardware, and troubleshooting techniques. Students will learn appropriate keyboarding technique and will work on building speed to the level expected in the workplace.

Software Application Training is offered for students wishing to learn the fundamentals of various software applications. An example of classes that are offered are MS2007 or MS2010 Office System Skills Upgrade, Microsoft Office Suite programs (Word, Excel, Access, etc), and Quickbooks. Training for other specific software packages may be arranged on an as requested/needed basis. Contact our office for more information on specific application training needs.

Accounting Fundamentals and Accounting with Computer Software Applications

Introduction to Accounting is a study of analyzing, classifying, and recording business transactions in a manual and computerized environment. An emphasis is placed on understanding the complete accounting cycle and preparing financial statements, bank reconciliations, and payroll.

ELECTRICAL

JOURNEYMAN ELECTRICIAN EXAM REVEW – Preparation for journeyman electrician licensure with emphasis on calculations and the National Electrical Code (NEC). Students taking this course should have some electrical experience. Students will be able to recognize and properly utilize formulas used to solve problems for direct current and alternating current application including single-phase and three-phase; describe proper materials and wiring methods used for wiring; explain license requirements of various jurisdictions and the procedures for applying and testing for licensure; and identify important test-taking skills. This is not a beginning electrical course. Textbook is required. Students should purchase the 2011 National Electrical Code Book. Non-programmable calculator with square root key is also required. Small classes mean personal attention to you toward passing the electrical exam. Newly expanded to meet 42 hours. This class is not a continuing education class for license renewal.

MASTER ELECTRICIAN EXAM REVIEW –A study of electrical theory, code calculations, and interpretations applicable to becoming a master electrician. This is not a basic electrical course. Emphasis is on residential, commercial, and industrial installations rules and laws using the current edition of the National Electric Code (NEC) and local ordinances. Students will use circuit analysis techniques to solve for unknowns in direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) circuits; utilize the NEC to size conductors, raceways, over-current protection, and other equipment for branch circuits; utilize the NEC to size services for single-family dwellings, multi-family dwellings, offices, stores, schools, mobile homes, recreational vehicles, commercial cooking equipment, and motors; and differentiate the rules and regulations of different cities relating to meeting the requirements for taking the Master Electrician's Exam and identify important test-taking skills. No textbook is required. Students should purchase the 2011 National Electrical Code Book. Small classes mean personal attention to you toward passing the electrical exam. A non-programable calculator is required. Newly expanded to meet 42 hours. This class is not a continuing education class for license renewal.

Nurse Aide for Health Care - Preparation for entry level nursing assistants to achieve a level of knowledge, skills, and abilities essential to provide basic care to residents of long-term care facilities and patients in the hospital setting. Topics include resident’s rights, communication, safety, observation, reporting and assisting residents in maintaining basic comfort and safety. Emphasis on effective interaction with members of the health care team. A method of instruction providing detailed education, training and work-based experience, and direct patient/client care at a clinical site. On-site clinical instruction, supervision & evaluation. The 24 hr. Clinical experiences are unpaid learning experiences.  Required of each student:

  • A criminal history background check will be performed by the Community Services staff prior to student enrollment in the CNA class.
  • Scrubs (Maroon) and closed tennis shoes/sneakers are required for all clinicals and advanced skills labs.
  • Students will also need to have a watch with a second hand.
  • Students are responsible for their own expense in case of injury, illness, or hospitalization while in clinical facilities.
  • A copy of written proof of immunizations including all 3 Hepatitis B shots or approved waiver and current TB test is required prior to clinical (direct patient contact). See Immunization Requirements.  Additional expense may be incurred to fulfill required proof of immunizations. Note:  Students may contact the Department of State Health Services Immunization Branch hotline (800)252-9152, for assistance with immunization records questions.
  • Textbook and workbook are required and available at the TVCC bookstore.

Successful completion of CNA course earns college credit for TVCC’s Associate Degree Nursing Program.  Currently, certified CNA’s are exempt from RNSG1119. Fees included in tuition: Exam fee - $93.00 (skills and written). 

This course is a 100-hour course (60 hours classroom, 16 hours advanced skills and 24 hours clinical in a long-term care facility). Regular attendance is required. High school students taking Continuing Education classes must notify their instructor if they will have major scheduling conflicts (such as TAAKS testing, etc.) which may prevent them from attending class, labs and/or clinicals.  Upon successful completion of course and clinicals you will be eligible to take the state exams (student must pass the skills exam before being are allowed to take the written or oral exam). To qualify for the state exam, students must pass the practice exams at 80% or higher in order to be recommended to take the state exam.Students must also meet the requirements listing at 94.3(k)(2)&(3) of the Licensing Standards for Nurse Aides and is not deemed unemployable on the Employee Misconduct Registry (EMR) or has been found to have a conviction of a criminal offense listed in the Texas Health and Safety Code, 250.006.  If the student passes both exams and meets state qualifications, they will be placed on the Texas Nurse Aide Registry. If student requires an oral test for Nurse Aide, a fee of $13.00 will be charged in addition to regular tuition and fees. Please sign up at least one week in advance for this class. Class enrollment is limited.

MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION (CMA) - This 140 hour course provides instruction in preparation for the Medication Administration exam for Nurse Aides. Before the class start date, all applicants must be high school graduates or have a general equivalency diploma (GED). Prior to enrollment, applicants that have attended high school outside of the United States need to have their high school documentation evaluated as being equivalent to a U. S. high school diploma.

Students will submit an Experience Documentation Report form documenting current employment on the first official day of the training program in a facility licensed under Health and Safety Code Chapter 242 in the capacity of a CERTIFIED NURSE AIDE- or in a Personal Care Facility license under Health and Safety Code 247, State School, ICF-MR facility or correctional institution as a non-licensed direct care staff person. (HOME HEALTH AGENCIES, STAFFING AGENCIES AND HOSPITALS ARE NOT LICENSED FACILITIES UNDER THE MEDICATION AIDE REGULATIONS.) For details or questions please call Continuing Education (903-675-6212). MEDICATION AIDE UPDATE - This 7 hour course will fulfill the annual education renewal requirements for the Med-Aide by the Department of Aging and Disability Services. Students will review and update rules and standards, as well as new information relating to responsibilities. Be sure to bring your Medication Aide permit number.

PHARMACY TECHNICIAN CERTIFICATION - This comprehensive 50 hour course will prepare students to enter the pharmacy field and to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s PTCB exam. Technicians work in hospitals, home infusion pharmacies, community pharmacies and other health care settings – working under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. Course content includes medical terminology specific to the pharmacy, reading and interpreting prescriptions and defining drugs by generic and brand names. Students will learn dosage calculations, I.V. flow rates, drug compounding, dose conversions, dispensing of prescriptions, inventory control and billing and reimbursement.

BASIC PHLEBOTOMY TECHNICIAN                            
This course prepares students to collect blood specimens for the purpose of laboratory analysis.  This didactic course includes all aspects related to blood collection and the development of comprehensive skills to perform venipunctures.  Course includes terminology, associated anatomy and physiology, blood collection procedures, specimen hands-on practice, and techniques to perform puncture methods.  Safety issues are emphasized.  Students will practice specimen collection on adults, children and infants.

Students will apply skills in the performance of a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and standard precautions in an additional skills lab.  The skills lab practice will be on manikins and with live sticks.  Skills lab will include vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary skin puncture, butterfly needles and blood culture and specimen collection on adults, children and infants.  Students will learn the basic procedures for medication injections.  Emphasis is on infection prevention, patient identification, specimen labeling, quality assurance, specimen handling, processing, accessioning, professionalism, ethics, checking medication dosage, and medical terminology. 

Minimum age is 16.  Required:  Maroon Scrubs, closed toe shoes of vinyl or leather (no fabric or porous outer shoe coverings – from any source).  Optional for class, but generally required for work: scrub jacket (from any source) and a watch with a second hand (from any source). These items will not be available from the college bookstore or the instructor.  Textbook is required (not included in tuition - $65 + tax and is available from the bookstore - Phlebotomy Handbook: Blood Specimen Collection from Basic to Advanced, 8th ed.,   ISBN #9780135134245). (52 hours) This course is required for students enrolled in the PCT/Medical Assistant program.

Students will be required to perform sticks (venipunctures) on other students as well as be stuck (having venipunctures performed on themselves by other students).  Rigid performance standards must be met prior to sticking other students. All venipunctures will be practiced in a skills lab environment.

NOTE THAT TAKING THE BASIC PHLEBOTOMY TECHNICIAN TRAINING LISTED IS ONLY THE FIRST STEP TO CERTIFICATION.  STUDENTS MUST ARRANGE FOR THE SECOND STEP AND CERTIFICATION COMPLETION.

Phlebotomy credentialing requirements: (1) the didactic/classroom instruction and practice provided by the Phlebotomy Technician course, plus (2) a work experience Phlebotomy Practicum course in an approved professional medical setting.   Students must seek medical facility/professionals on their own for the practicum course to complete the credentialing process.  Students MUST check with credentialing organization for specific requirements. Upon request, TVCC will provide the phlebotomy student with a packet called “Student Phlebotomy Practicum Application and Agreement Form” that the student can use as a template and guide in setting up a phlebotomy practicum/work experience with a medical facility/professional.

PHLEBOTOMY PRACTICUM
A field experience providing practical, general workplace training supported by professionals in an outside professional medical facility.  This class is designed as a structure for the Phlebotomy student to seek and participate in real life experiences in the performance of a variety of blood collection techniques and safety precautions in a professional setting.  The student will arrange his experience with a professional facility and upon completion will be able to provide documentation of experience to the credentialing agency of his/her choice. 
The course instructor will work with the medical facility on behalf of the student to verify and document the completed phlebotomy experiences and hours.

NOTE THAT THIS PRACTICUM WORK EXPERIENCE IS ARRANGED BY THE STUDENT FOR CERTIFICATION AND MONITORED BY THE COLLEGE.  DOCUMENTATION OF THE STUDENT’S EXPERIENCE WILL BE MAINTAINED BY THE COLLEGE AND WILL APPEAR ON THE STUDENT TRANSCRIPT. 

RE-ENTRY NURSING UPDATE - This course is designed for either (1) the currently licensed nurse (RN/LVN) who has been away from the clinical setting for a period of time, (2) the nurse who is applying for reinstatement of licensure, or (3) the nurse who is applying for Texas licensure coming from another state. Course includes: current role of the nurse, nursing process, basic pharmacology, medication administration, IV, phlebotomy, documentation, AQ and legal issues. A supervised clinical experience is required and can be take the same semester. Textbooks are required. (128 hours.)

HORTICULTURE (MASTER GARDENER CERTIFICATION - OFFERED ONLY IN THE FALL)

An overview of the horticulture industry, plant science, terminology, classification, propagation, environmental responses and careers and opportunities in the field of horticulture.

Texas Master Gardener Certification is a program for volunteers who take an active interest in lawns, trees, shrubs, flowers and gardens. Enrollment in this program is by application to the Henderson County Cooperative Extension office. This special training in horticulture sets them apart from other home gardeners and prepares the student for membership in the Henderson County Master Gardener organization. Master Gardeners are enthusiastic and willing to learn and help others by volunteering through the Cooperative Extension Office to provide horticultural-related information to their communities. The type of service done by Master Gardeners varies according to community needs and the abilities and interests of the group. The Henderson County Extension Office and Horticulture Committee are partners with TVCC in offering this certification and will coordinate the volunteer work related to the program. This program will include both classroom hours and practicum hours.Students interested in obtaining the Master Gardener certification should contact the Henderson County Extension Office at 903-675-6130. Books, supplies, and testing for certification are the responsibility of the student.
