TO DEVELOP SKILLS
Adapted from PBDS “Yellow Card”
CRITICAL THINKING
>>Synthesize data/Problem label
- What complications could occur?
- What clinical data would lead you to believe this complication is/would occur?
>>Management
Give multiple opportunities to simulate calling the physicians.
Before calling, ask student the following questions:
- What data would you give the physician?
- What orders will you hope/expect to get from the physician?
- Why are these orders needed?
· Independent nursing actions:
Ask student…for patients assigned:
- What nursing actions do you need to take and why?
>>Rationales to support actions
· Ask student…for patients assigned:
- Why are these particular interventions relevant for this patient?
>>Urgency
· Ask student…for patients assigned:
- What clinical data would indicate the patient needs immediate intervention/why?
If action(s)/intervention(s) taken by the student are irrelevant/have caused or have potential for harm –
ASK: What makes your action unacceptable/undesirable?
What action should have been taken?
>>Interpersonal (IPR)
· Discuss incidents describing either negative or positive outcomes. Include:
- who was involved?
- the issues or conflict
- the intended or desired outcome; IPR strategy used
- results of the strategy
- if negative outcome, discuss alternative strategies or responses
>>Medications
- When would you question giving medication?
- How do you know it’s effective?
- What would you do to prevent/address side/adverse effects of medication?
- What would you teach the patient regarding medication?
